Vi Adds 6.5 Lakh New Customers After 15 Months

After over a draught of 15 months the Vodafone Idea has added 6.5 lakh subscribers, TRAI reported. The last time, it was in October 2019 the telecom company has added so many subscribers. With the addition of the new 6.5 lakh subscribers, the total subscribers of Vodafone Idea have crossed the mark of 28 crores.

Share prices of Vodafone Idea soared up 12 percent on Wednesday with the announcement.

On the other hand, Airtel, the second biggest Telco in India in terms of subscriber base added 37 lakh, new subscribers, in the February month period. Now the total subscribers of Airtel stand at 34 crores. Reliance Jio is still dominating the market with 41 crore total subscribers in India. The biggest telco in India added whooping 42 lakh new subscribers to its network.

BSNL and MTNL lost 3.5 lakh and 5261 subscribers respectively. BSNL and MTNL both are owned by the Indian government.

Jio still holds the number one position in India

According to Reliance Jio, it has around 42.62 crore subscribers in the first quarter of the year 2021. Airtel and Vi had over 30 crores and 26.98 crores respectively by the last quarter of the year 2020. However, except for Jio, both companies are yet to announce the figures for the March quarter.

It is interesting to note that Jio suffered due to the farmer movement in the early months of the year. A negative atmosphere was created against Telco causing a loss of new subscribers. Reliance Jio added only19 lakh subscribers in the month of January. But as the dust has settled, 42 lakh new subscribers chose Mukesh Ambani-led Jio in the month of February 2021. However, it is uncertain how many of the new subscribers are ones who parted away during the agitation.

Market share of Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea

As per the latest data, Jio has the maximum share in the market with 35.54% followed by Airtel at 29.83%. Vodafone Idea holds a 24.20% market share in India. Government-owned BSNL and MTNL have less than 10% market share.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, rural wireless subscriptions saw a growth of 0.44% as compared to urban wireless subscriptions of 0.94%.
