The Center of Excellence is the very first facility setup in the country by Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI) in the VLSI and Embedded System Design (ESD) domain
Electronics Sector Skills Council of India today inaugurated their very first Center of Excellence for Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) and Embedded System Design at BMS College of Engineering. ESSCI has developed over 140 Qualification Packs (QP)/National Occupation Standards (NOS) across 14 sub-sectors of which Embedded System Design and VLSI are key domains absorbing engineers. To cater to the industry skill requirement, ESSCI in association with BMSCE and India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) has piloted this initiative. The center is housed in the Department of Electronics and Communication, BMSCE.
The CoE functions with a vision of creating skilled and industry aligned faculty, and is the first dedicated facility for faculty development in the country. The initiative falls under the umbrella of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and is an effort towards realizing “Skill India”; an initiative launched by our Honorable Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi. The Center of Excellence was inaugurated by the formal ceremonial lightning of the lamp by Chief Guest Dr. Madhusudan V Atre, CEO & Founder-Vegashakti Consultants; in the presence of Sri. N K Mohapatra, CEO-ESSCI; Sri M N Vidyashankar, IAS (Retd.), President-IESA and Dr. K Mallikharjuna Babu, Principal-BMSCE. The inaugural saw the participation of Principals, Head of Departments and Faculties from other colleges and representatives from MNC’s.
Addressing the Gathering, Dr. K Mallikharjuna Babu, said that, “Engineering education has gone through tremendous change and it becomes the institution’s responsibility to produce quality engineers and to do that, it is important that we train the trainer. Hence, the Center of Excellence is one such place which will train the trainer to develop the skills that the industries require today.”
Sri. N K Mohapatra, CEO, ESSCI, said that, “We are not creating enough value and confidence amongst the student community to face life on their own by just teaching the students what is already there in textbooks. ESSCI through this initiative will support in enhancing the skills that are required for the changing world. Through this initiative, we are leaping forward one step at a time and Bengaluru is the first city and BMS College of Engineering is the first college that we have associated with for this initiative. In this year alone we are planning to open 3 more centers in India one in West, East, and North.”
“India’s electronics and semiconductor sectors have been on an upswing in the past few years. The country is already home to a large number of semiconductor design facilities and we are recognised for its supreme design capabilities. As the country is strengthening its ESDM manufacturing base coupled with high-end R&D projects, we are clearly moving ahead of the curve and India is emerging as a centre of attraction for ESDM design and manufacturing. Along with the industry growth, India needs to create a firm engineering talent base catering to the needs of this high-tech industry. We are glad to partner with ‘Electronics Sector Skills Council of India’ to set up the Center of Excellence (CoE) at BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore to create skilled and industry aligned faculty ecosystem,” M.N. Vidyashankar, President, India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA).
The inauguration was attended by representatives from many MNC’s like ARM, Intel, Mentor Graphics, LSI, Tata Elxsi to name a few. “There is a lot of effort and support coming in from all stake holders towards this national interest. I am sure this significant value addition will showcase itself as outcomes in the days to come.” added Mr. Srinivas A N, Program Manager CoE, ESSCI.
