Protecting your system has way too many aspects. Different users use different platforms, apps, tools etc. to suite their needs and liking. Moreover, attackers can come calling from various sources and you have to ensure that vulnerabilities are always plugged. It is only obvious you need apps that can take care of these tasks for you. And when these are open source, well that’s even better!
1.ClamWin Free Antivirus
ClamWin is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 8/ 7 / Vista / XP / Me / 2000 / 98 and Windows Server 2012, 2008 and 2003. It comes with an easy installer and open source code. It is based on ClamAV engine and uses GNU General Public License by the Free Software Foundation. ClamWin Free Antivirus however does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.
2.ClamAV
ClamAV is an open source (GPL) antivirus engine designed for detecting Trojans, viruses, malware and other malicious threats. It is the de facto standard for mail gateway scanning. It provides a high performance mutli-threaded scanning daemon, command line utilities for on demand file scanning, and an intelligent tool for automatic signature updates.
3.Moon Secure Antivirus
Moon Secure AV is an opensource antivirus currently using the clamav engine due to fast response time and huge AV database, however we are implementing another engine that is heuristic and will allow users to customise the engine on the fly. Unlike clam it has an enterprise level real-time scanner. It is built for windows.
4.AMaVis
AMaVis is a high-performance interface between mailer (MTA) and content checkers: virus scanners, and/or SpamAssassin. It is written in Perl for maintainability, without paying a significant price for speed. It talks to MTA via (E)SMTP or LMTP, or by using helper programs.
5.P3Scan
This is a full-transparent proxy-server for email clients. It runs on a Linux box with iptables (for port re-direction). It can be used to provide email scanning from the internet, to any internal network and is ideal for helping to protect your “Other OS” LAN from harm, especially when used in conjunction with a firewall and other Internet Proxy servers.
6.Viralator
Viralator is a Perl script that virus scans HTTP/FTP downloads request on a UNIX server after passing through the Squid proxy server.
7.xpy
xpy allows tweaking the default settings to your needs. This includes the disabling of services, changing the behaviour and usability, deleting undesired files, or tweaking programs like Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and Windows Messenger.
8.Nixory
Nixory is a free and open source antispyware tool written in Python/PyGTK aimed at removing malicious tracking cookies from your browser. It currently supports Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. It runs on all OS, including Windows, Linux and MacOSX.
9.Mute
MUTE File Sharing is a peer-to-peer network that provides easy search-and-download functionality while also protecting your privacy.
10.Waste
WASTE is an anonymous, secure, and encryped collaboration tool which allows users to both share ideas through the chat interface and share data through the download system. WASTE is RSA secured, and has been hearalded as the most secure P2P connection protocol currently in development.
11.ANts P2P
ANts P2P realises a third generation P2P net. It protects your privacy while you are connected and it makes you not trackable, hiding your identity (ip) and crypting everything you are sending/receiving from others.
12. Eraser
Eraser is an advanced security tool for Windows which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.
13.Darik’s Boot and Nuke
DBAN is a self-contained boot disk that automatically deletes the contents of any hard disk that it can detect. This method can help prevent identity theft before recycling a computer. It is also a solution commonly used to remove viruses and spyware from Microsoft Windows installations. DBAN prevents all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis.
14.Wipe
Wipe is a secure file wiping utility. Operating System: Linux.
15.AxCrypt
AxCrypt is the leading open source file encryption software for Windows. It integrates seamlessly with Windows to compress, encrypt, decrypt, store, send and work with individual files.
16.MCrypt
MCrypt is a replacement for the old crypt() package and crypt(1) command, with extensions. It allows developers to use a wide range of encryption functions, without making drastic changes to their code.
17.Hide in Picture
Hide In Picture is a program that allows you to conceal files inside bitmap pictures, using a password. The pictures look like normal images, so people will not suspect there is hidden data in them.
18.Steghide
Steghide is a steganography program that is able to hide data in various kinds of image and audio files. The color- respectivly sample-frequencies are not changed thus making the embedding resistant against first-order statistical tests.
19.GPGrelay
GPGrelay is a little relaying server which interferes SMTP- and POP3-Communication that way, that transmission of emails will be signed and/or encrypted on the fly using GnuPG (The GNU Privacy Guard) with your default email-program.
20.ShellTer
ShellTer is an iptables-based firewall. It supports port forwarding, blacklisting, whitelisting, etc. It has built-in SSH brute force protection. It is easy to configure and has an interactive CLI installer.
