New AI Model Has the Ability to Forecast Earthquakes

An artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin has demonstrated the ability to predict 70% of earthquakes a week before they occurred during a seven-month trial in China.

The AI was trained to detect statistical anomalies in real-time seismic data combined with historical earthquake data, resulting in weekly forecasts that successfully predicted 14 earthquakes within approximately 200 miles of their estimated location and with nearly exact magnitude.

While further research is needed to determine its applicability in other regions, this development represents a significant milestone in AI-driven earthquake forecasting and preparedness efforts.
