Zomato sets a goal for achieving 100% electric vehicle deliveries within the next ten years

Zomato has unveiled an ambitious set of sustainability objectives for the coming decade, underscoring its commitment to environmental responsibility and support for gig workers. The popular online food delivery platform aims to achieve 100% deliveries through electric vehicles (EVs) by the year 2033, signaling a significant step toward achieving net-zero emissions throughout its entire food ordering and delivery value chain within the next twelve years.

In addition to prioritizing eco-friendly delivery methods, Zomato has outlined plans to make all food delivery orders plastic-neutral through the implementation of voluntary recycling measures. The company has set a specific target, aspiring to deliver 100 million plastic-free food orders by 2025, showcasing its dedication to mitigating the environmental impact of its operations.

Ramesh Krishnamurthi, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, lauded Zomato and other platforms for aligning with the government’s push toward EV adoption. He acknowledged the commitment of platforms like Zomato to facilitate 100% deliveries through EVs, ultimately leading to net-zero emissions across the food ordering and delivery value chain by 2033.

Beyond its environmental initiatives, Zomato is placing a strong emphasis on supporting gig workers. The company intends to enhance the earning and saving capacities of one million gig workers through various initiatives, including upskilling programs, partnerships, and benefit programs. Rakesh Ranjan, CEO of Food Delivery at Zomato, highlighted the transformative impact of gig work on livelihoods in India, emphasizing how it has democratized access to livelihoods by reducing entry barriers and providing improved income prospects for thousands of people.

As part of its broader sustainability goals, Zomato is committed to developing food ordering and delivery solutions tailored for the next billion customers. The focus will be on affordability, accessibility, assortment, and quality to cater to a diverse customer base. The company has also pledged support for the growth of 300,000 micro, small, and medium restaurant businesses and food entrepreneurs. Additionally, Zomato aims to bring health and safety knowledge and innovations to its restaurant partners.

This comprehensive approach reflects Zomato’s recognition of the multifaceted challenges and opportunities within the food delivery industry.
