UIDAI Launches SITAA to Boost AI-Driven Innovation in Aadhaar Authentication

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has unveiled an ambitious initiative, the Scheme for Innovation and Technology Association with Aadhaar (SITAA), aimed at strengthening India’s digital identity ecosystem. The program seeks to encourage collaboration with startups, academic institutions, and industry players to develop indigenous, AI-based solutions that enhance the security, scalability, and reliability of Aadhaar authentication.

SITAA is centered around cutting-edge technologies including real-time deepfake detection, AI-powered face liveness systems, and contactless fingerprint authentication. UIDAI has called for proposals to participate in these pilot challenges, with applications open until 15 November 2025. By fostering innovation in these areas, the authority aims to make Aadhaar authentication more robust against emerging digital threats.

To facilitate the program, UIDAI has partnered with the MeitY Startup Hub (MSH) and NASSCOM. MSH will provide mentorship, incubation, and accelerator support for selected startups, while NASSCOM will enable industry collaboration and help Indian innovators gain international exposure. These partnerships are intended to provide a strong ecosystem for nurturing technology solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into Aadhaar.

“The SITAA programme reflects India’s commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and self-reliant digital identity framework,” UIDAI noted in its official announcement.

Key Challenges under SITAA

  1. Face Liveness Detection: Startups are encouraged to create software development kits (SDKs) capable of detecting spoofing attempts, including deepfakes, masks, and morphs. The solutions must work reliably across diverse devices, demographics, and environments, supporting both edge and server deployment with minimal friction for users.

  2. Presentation Attack Detection: Research institutions are invited to develop AI and machine learning-based systems that can identify print, replay, morph, and adversarial attacks in real or near-real time. The solutions must ensure high accuracy, comply with privacy standards, and maintain interoperability with Aadhaar APIs while adhering to the Aadhaar Act.

  3. Contactless Fingerprint Authentication: Proposals are sought for SDKs that use standard smartphone cameras or cost-effective imaging devices to authenticate fingerprints without contact. These systems must integrate liveness detection, ensure high-quality imaging, produce AFIS-compliant templates, and perform efficiently on mobile and edge platforms.

Through SITAA, UIDAI aims to strengthen Aadhaar’s defenses amid growing concerns around biometric fraud and sophisticated deepfake technologies. The initiative also supports India’s broader objectives of building Digital Public Infrastructure and promoting Atmanirbhar Bharat, enabling the nation to achieve technological self-reliance in identity authentication systems.

By integrating AI-driven solutions with Aadhaar, SITAA is poised to enhance the security, efficiency, and trustworthiness of one of the world’s largest digital identity frameworks, reinforcing India’s leadership in digital identity innovation.
