Kaspersky Lab has announced the results of the first regional round of its “CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014” student conference that was held last week in Milan, Italy.
”CyberSecurity for the Next Generation” is an annual international event financed and organized by Kaspersky Lab. This long-term project brings together students, young scientists and researchers, leading IT security experts and university professors from across the world in a collaborative environment to present and discuss topical cybersecurity issues. It provides the next generation with an opportunity to share knowledge and experience, to develop new ideas and improve the level of IT security.

This year’s “CyberSecurity for the Next Generation” includes four regional rounds: the European Cup, the Russia & CIS Cup, the Asia-Pacific & MEA Cup and the Americas Cup. The winners of each contest will be invited to the Final Round which will be hosted in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 2014. Among the topics which might be of interest to participants in 2014 include emerging threats for emerging platforms; securing cloud, virtual and ‘big-data’ infrastructure; future protection technologies; securing corporate infrastructure; and security education.

The European round took place on December 10-12 at the Politecnico di Milano. 15 representatives of the best universities from all over Europe showcased their research papers to a program committee of Kaspersky Lab experts, respected university professors, renowned industry experts and media. The jury selected the authors of the most interesting, strategically important and innovative cybersecurity projects. The winners have received cash prizes as well as an invitation to attend the global finals of ‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014’ in Stockholm.

The winners of the European round are:

First place – Maurizio Abbà from Eurecom, France, for the presentation ‘Web Honeypots 2.0: an Analysis of Exploitation Behaviors on the Web’

Second place – Sebastiano Gottardo from the University of Padua, Italy, for the presentation ‘MITHYS: Mind the Hand You Shake’

Third place – David Korczynski from Royal Holloway, UK, for the presentation ‘Hierarchical Clustering on a Lightweight Feature Set Based on Extensive Dynamic Analysis’
