Discord is discontinuing the Clyde AI chatbot

Discord has announced the discontinuation of Clyde, its experimental AI chatbot, effective from the end of the month. Users will lose the ability to invoke Clyde in Direct Messages (DMs), Group DMs, or server chats starting December 1.

The company had previously tested Clyde’s AI capabilities, enabling it to respond to queries and engage in conversations using OpenAI’s models. Although Discord had plans to integrate Clyde as a core element of its chat and communities application, it has now decided to deactivate the chatbot by the specified date.

The support note for Clyde’s shutdown expressed gratitude for user support and feedback, emphasizing Discord’s ongoing efforts to introduce new features and experiences. While the precise reason for Clyde’s sudden shutdown remains unclear, there is speculation about potential future reintroduction, possibly as a Nitro-only feature.

Discord has not officially clarified the rationale behind discontinuing the AI chatbot. Clyde, as an experimental feature, allowed users to integrate an AI chat on their server, offering features like knowledge-sharing, tips, jokes, interactive games such as trivia, and recommendations for movies and books.

It provided a platform for users to express themselves and engage in discussions on various topics. Discord has been exploring different AI functionalities, including AI-generated conversation summaries for users to catch up on missed discussions, especially beneficial for servers spanning multiple time zones.

Additionally, Discord is positioning its platform as a hub for AI developers, providing funds and resources to support developers in creating AI applications for Discord.
