Danfoss India launches Danfoss Innovator Awards in Chennai

  • The annual student engagement initiative will help bring forth innovations from college students across reputed institutions in the country

    Previous Edition’s winners awarded for innovative solutions addressing real life problems

Danfoss logo27 July 2015, Chennai: The best way to predict the future is to create it. Danfoss, a global climate and energy technology expert, believes in innovating for a better tomorrow through futuristic technology. In India, Danfoss plans to spread the innovation fever among future talent and for this, it launched its annual University Engagement Initiative, Danfoss Innovator Awards 2015-16 here today in SSN College.

Danfoss Innovator Project Award is an intercollegiate competition designed for final year students in Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) courses, who have an interest in ‘creating futuristic solutions’ that have the potential to be impactful in the areas of climate and energy.

Whilst they launched the new edition of the Innovator awards, the company also awarded winners of the previous edition which included extremely creative and problem solving innovations from young college students.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Ravichandran Purushothaman, President, Danfoss India said, “With the technology boom gaining ground across the world, it is important to fuel the innovative spirit in the future generation of the country. Enthused by the entries received last year we have launched Danfoss Innovator Awards 2015-16 edition with the certainty that this competition will encourage students to think beyond the ordinary and develop scientific temperament.

The projects are adjudged based on originality, novelty, and functionality of futuristic technology as well as ease of implementation of the respective project ideas. UG Category winners will receive cash prize of Rs. 1, 50,000 (first prize), 75,000(second prize) and Rs. 50,000 (third prize). PG category winners will receive cash prizes worth Rs. 2, 00, 000(first prize), 1, 00,000 (second prize) and Rs. 50,000 (third prize). The prize money is aimed at encouraging the winning teams to develop the prototype of their award winning ideas. 

UG Category Winners- 2014-15 Edition

First prize was bagged by students from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore for their project titled SCADA Water Management System which reduces the conventional losses in water transmission and utilization. It is aimed at automating water management to reduce repeated labor work which in turn is economically beneficial and provides the monitoring and control throughout even from a remote location. 

The second prize, which again went to PSG team entails the development of a machine that can automate the process of wax polishing handloom silk sarees thereby reducing the cost and labor involved in this age old practice. The automated wax polishing machine is touted to reduce the labour dependency of the process by almost 29 per cent and also increases productivity by three times.

PG Category Winners-2014-15 Edition

SSN College, Chennai bagged the first prize in the PG Category for their project on velocity control of linear switched reluctance motor for elevator applications.

The second prize was bagged by PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore for their project on the design and implementation of energy efficient Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) drive for low and medium power pumps used in industrial and agricultural applications.

The third prize was bagged by Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore for their project that deals with multilevel inverters and the controlling of induction motor drive.
