In today’s fast paced world it is very rare that one comes across a person who values relationships a lot. Mr. Rajan Mathur, Director, TMS Electronics Pvt. Ltd. is one such personality. Having done his engineering from Chandigarh and MBA from Jaipur, he went on doing job for 8 years. Reminiscing about his earlier days, he says, “I started my professional journey with DCM Data Products in Pune. It’s here that two of my branch managers taught me about the intricacies of sales. Having worked here for five years I moved to TVSE. They offered me a position in Delhi which was nearer to my home town Jaipur.”

When asked about the reason behind starting business, he explains, “In the year 1992, I was asked by TVSE to move to Kolkata as RM. I had to forego since my parents did not want me to move away from Jaipur. Around the same time, my landlord asked to vacate the flat in Basant Kunj. I found that the rents had doubled and my salary had not. I could now only afford a flat in Gurgaon – more towards Jaipur. That got me thinking that my parents do not want me away from Jaipur and every time a landlord asks me to shift, I would have to move more and more towards Jaipur so why not right away.

As the luck may have it, Mr. Mathur was offered the dealership from TVSE for Jaipur region. Having no family background of business, it must have been tough to start fresh. Not agreeing to this completely, he says, “In Nov ’93 when I was offered the dealership, it was a blessing in disguise, as I was looking for something to do in Jaipur. Yes I agree I don’t have a family business background, but I was clear on one thing, I would run my company as a CEO and not as a businessman.  Keeping this mind, we officially registered the company – initially as TM Systems and then later as TMS Electronics Pvt.  Ltd.”

TMS Electronics having obtained the dealership of TVSE in Nov 1993 became the distributor in 1994. As far as he can remember TVS and TMS were the first organisations to start reseller meet concept in Rajasthan. Those days he travelled all over Rajasthan, and built relationships with various resellers. In 1994, they also became the partners for Wipro Infotech (PC Division). In ’94 only, they started selling Microsoft and various other Software packages through Sonata Softwares and Wipro Systems. At this point they were distributing TVSE products and selling Wipro PC’s, Softwares etc. to the Corporates. Their business was growing day by day and HP (PC division) came on board in 1997.

They also became ASP’s for various Companies and were service centers for HP, APC, and TVSE to their portfolio. There was a time when they were attending over 4000 warranty calls per month. Today, TMS Electronics(RCTA member) is partner for various Companies like, D-link, HP, Dell, Cyber Power, Benq, Lenovo, APC etc.

On his personal front, Mr. Mathur met his wife in 1988. Talking about the support extended from his better half, he says, “She has been anchor in my life. As she was looking after the home front, I could fully concentrate on setting my business without any worries. Once the children became a little older, she started looking after the services segment of the company.”

Talking about his kids, he says “My daughter after completing her graduation is active in social work sector. She is associated with an NGO Sewa Bharat which works for the uplift-ment of the women.  And my son is pursuing his engineering from NIIT University.” When asked about whether any one of them is interested in taking up the baton from him, he smiles and replies “That time will tell. My daughter is working for a noble cause and enjoying herself. As about my son it will be his call completely.”

While talking with Mr. Mathur, one thing I can tell for sure, he has always valued his relationships more than anything in life. A man who gave up his job to be there for his parents speaks volumes about his character. In his words, “Trust in a relationship is a very important criterion for me. When it comes to business, I am not an aggressive person. I would rather give it time, learn about the other person, and if the frequency matches, then it is a lifelong relation at least from my end.”
