WhatsApp Rolls Out Vanishing Voice Messages

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to send voice messages that disappear after they are listened to. This feature, known as “View Once” for voice messages, is an extension of the feature introduced in 2021 for photos and videos. With this update, users can send sensitive information or plan surprises through voice messages that automatically vanish once played.

Just like “View Once” photos and videos, the disappearing voice messages are marked with a “one-time” icon, indicating that they can only be played once. WhatsApp emphasizes that these voice messages are protected with end-to-end encryption by default, ensuring the privacy and security of the shared content. The company has stated that the new feature is rolling out globally over the coming days.

To use the “View Once” feature for voice messages, users need to select the option each time they send a message. Once the message is sent and listened to, it cannot be played again, adding an element of ephemeral communication. Recipients can see if a “View Once” voice message has been opened, provided they have read receipts turned on.

WhatsApp provides some guidance for users regarding the use of “View Once” media, whether it’s photos, videos, or voice messages. It is recommended to only send such content to people whom users trust, as recipients may find ways to save or capture the media before it disappears. Additionally, encrypted media may be stored on WhatsApp’s servers for a few weeks, and if a recipient reports the content, it will be provided to WhatsApp.

When receiving a “View Once” photo, video, or voice message, users must open it within 14 days of being sent; otherwise, it will expire from the chat. The forwarded, saved, starred, or shared options are disabled for “View Once” media, ensuring that it remains limited to a single viewing. The article also notes that “View Once” media can be restored from backups if the message is unopened at the time of the backup, but if it was opened, it won’t be included in the backup and cannot be restored.

This update aligns with the trend of providing users with more control over the privacy and longevity of the content they share on messaging platforms. As WhatsApp continues to enhance its features, users can benefit from a more versatile and secure messaging experience, especially when dealing with sensitive information or content intended for temporary viewing. The introduction of “View Once” for voice messages adds another layer to the platform’s commitment to user privacy and security.
