The United States government’s unexpected export control directive banning foreign nationals from utilizing Anthropic’s newly launched Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models has sent shockwaves through the global tech industry, sparking a major push for sovereign AI infrastructure in India. The restriction, issued by the Trump administration over sudden cybersecurity and national security concerns, forced Anthropic to abruptly disable access to these frontier models worldwide.
The blanket suspension restricts access to any foreign citizen, whether located inside or outside the US, directly affecting prominent Indian IT service providers and enterprises. Industry experts warn that being locked out of Fable 5’s advanced agentic coding and automation capabilities could place Indian tech firms at a severe competitive disadvantage compared to American rivals. Furthermore, the restriction highlights deep concerns regarding digital equity, given that these international frontier systems are heavily trained on global data assets originating from Indian users, text, and markets.
In response, prominent tech leaders in India are advocating for a swift transition from technological consumption to localized operational self-reliance. Sarvam AI co-founder and CEO Pratyush Kumar stated that the US export ban serves as a crucial reminder that digital access must not be mistaken for true technological ownership. He emphasized that relying entirely on foreign AI infrastructure exposes domestic enterprises to sudden geopolitical control loops.
To mitigate these supply risks and secure technological autonomy, Indian firms are accelerating sovereign AI development. Sarvam AI has already initiated this shift by deploying the country’s first specialized Blackwell computing cluster and training its proprietary “Sarvam 105B” model to establish independent local capabilities.
