iOS 17 may make it easier for iPhone users to decipher symbols with the Photos app

Apple unveiled its latest operating system, iOS 17, for iPhone users during its annual developer conference, WWDC 2023. The new software is currently in beta testing and is expected to be released to the public soon. iOS 17 introduces a range of new features and updates, including enhancements to the Photos app.

According to a report from MacRumors, Apple will utilize machine learning technology in iOS 17 to help the Photos app identify various symbols, such as those found on clothing tags or vehicle dashboards. With the new Visual Lookup feature, when users take a photo of a laundry tag or a car dashboard, the app will highlight the symbols present and allow users to tap on them for translation and meaning.

The report states that iOS 17’s Photos app will be able to explain each symbol found on laundry tags and vehicle dashboards. Apple has partnered with the International Organisation for Standardisation to provide explanations for laundry instructions through its online browsing platform.

The Visual Lookup tool in iOS 17 has successfully recognized various laundry symbols, including washing machine temperatures, bleaching recommendations, dryer restrictions, and ironing temperatures. However, it’s important to note that the image needs to be zoomed in for the iPhone to detect the symbols accurately.

The ability of Visual Lookup to identify car symbols on dashboards suggests that iPhones will also support common symbols encountered in everyday life.

In addition to the symbol recognition feature, iOS 17’s Photos app will offer other enhancements, including pet recognition, one-tap crop, animated stickers created from Live Photos, and recipe searches based on food pictures.
