IIT Madras Graduate Mocks Google with Satya Nadella Selfie: ‘Let’s Make Them Dance’

Aravind Srinivas, the CEO and co-founder of Perplexity AI, a San Francisco-based search startup, posted a selfie with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, accompanied by the caption, “Let’s make them dance.” This post was in response to a comment suggesting that Perplexity AI could give strong competition to Google.

Jeff Huber, a tech entrepreneur from San Francisco, had stated that Microsoft aimed to make Google dance, but he believed that Perplexity AI would be the one to achieve this feat. Aravind Srinivas responded to this claim by sharing a photo with Satya Nadella, adding to the intrigue.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the founder of Paytm, was among those who expressed approval by ‘liking’ the post shared by Aravind Srinivas.

Perplexity AI, a 16-month-old artificial intelligence (AI) startup founded by Srinivas and others, recently secured $73.6 million in funding from notable investors, including US chipmaker Nvidia and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The funding round valued the startup at $520 million, and it brought Perplexity AI’s total funding to $100 million.

The startup is positioning itself as a challenger to industry giants like Google and Microsoft Bing in the competitive search engine space. The funding comes at a time when major tech players are increasingly integrating AI into their search engine offerings.

Aravind Srinivas, an alumnus of IIT-Madras, had previously interned at DeepMind, Google, and OpenAI. Before co-founding Perplexity AI, he served as a research scientist at OpenAI.

Perplexity AI distinguishes itself with a chatbot-style interface that allows users to pose questions using everyday language. Similar to Microsoft, Perplexity offers an AI assistant named Copilot. The startup’s recent funding round, with participation from high-profile investors, signals growing interest and support for innovative approaches to search technology.

While the post with Satya Nadella hints at ambitions to disrupt the search engine landscape, the strategic importance of partnerships and alliances in the tech industry cannot be overlooked. As Perplexity AI aims to carve out a niche in the highly competitive field of search engines, its collaboration with key players like Nvidia and Jeff Bezos brings both financial support and industry recognition.

The funding will likely be instrumental in furthering Perplexity AI’s research and development efforts, allowing it to enhance its technology and stay competitive in the evolving AI-driven search ecosystem. The startup’s valuation reflects investor confidence in its potential to make significant strides in the search engine market.

As Google and Microsoft continue to advance their AI capabilities in search, Perplexity AI’s unique approach and recent funding position it as a noteworthy player to watch. The dynamics of the search engine industry may see interesting shifts as emerging startups leverage innovative technologies to challenge established players. The coming months will reveal how Perplexity AI utilizes its newfound resources to realize its ambitions and potentially influence the landscape of digital search.
