Google rolls out third-party smart chips for Docs, lets users integrate data from other services

Google has officially announced the availability of its smart chips feature for users of Google Docs worldwide. This feature enables users to embed third-party apps, known as smart chips, into their documents. It is part of Google’s smart canvas revamp of its office suite services, which also includes the pageless layout in Google Docs. The smart chips feature is now being rolled out to both Google Workspace users and personal Google account users.

So, how does the smart chips feature work in Google Docs? With the integration of third-party smart chips, users can incorporate data from external sources into their documents. Workspace users will need admin access to use this feature, while personal users can start using it without any additional permissions. However, both types of users will need to install the app’s add-on for Docs through the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Once the add-on app is installed, users can simply copy the share link of the desired data from the external app and paste it into their document. Pressing the Tab key will activate the smart chips, allowing users to preview the information and other details. This feature is particularly useful for collaboration, as it enables users to quickly import data from external sources into their documents without leaving the document itself.

The implementation of smart chips depends on the developers of third-party services. Different services may offer varying levels of integration and functionality within Google Docs, depending on how developers choose to utilize the smart chips feature.
