Google Meet enables specific users to initiate direct calls without sharing links

Google is introducing a new feature allowing Workspace users to directly initiate 1:1 calls without the prior necessity of generating a meeting link. Previously, Workspace users had to create a meeting link in advance, which was then shared through email or chat as a calendar invite. However, with the update, users can now conduct encrypted 1:1 video calls using the Meet mobile app.

In a blog post detailing the update, Google announced the ability for users to place Meet calls directly to colleagues’ mobile devices. This enhancement enables Workspace users to leverage various Meet features during the call, encompassing in-meeting chat, virtual backgrounds, visual effects, live closed captions, and more, depending on the Workspace edition utilized.

The default setting for this functionality will be activated, with the option to disable it available only by turning off Meet meetings and calls for the organization, according to Google.

It’s important to note that these Meet calls will not incorporate certain ‘legacy calling features’ from Google Duo, such as group calls, messages, family mode, and knock knock. These features, however, will remain accessible for users who opt not to update to the new version of the app.

Google assures that this update will be accessible to all Workspace users, with the rollout already commencing for iOS users on November 2 and scheduled for initiation for Android users from November 14. The deployment is expected to take up to 15 days to become fully visible, emphasizing it as an “extended rollout” process.
