Google Arts and Culture selfie feature is now available in India

Google very recently added a selfie match feature to its Arts and Culture app — which mainly matches your selfie with an artform. Until last week, the feature was available in the US, but now, starting this week, the feature has started rolling out to the Indian users as well. The Google Arts and Culture selfie feature is now available on both Android and iOS in India.
The selfie match feature of Google Arts and Culture app went viral in no time. As per an IANS report, ever since the first roll-out, people have used the feature by taking over 30 million selfies. The feature basically lets users find their “selfie doppelganger”. It mainly matches the user’s selfies with a look-alike art from the collections of art museums worldwide that is present in their database.
According to Google Arts and Culture app, there’s a portrait that looks like you in some corner of the world, and the new selfie matching feature helps you find that art. “At Google Arts & Culture, our software engineers are always experimenting with new and creative ways to connect you with art and culture. That’s how this selfie feature came about, too,” says a Google spokesperson.
According to Google, the Google Arts and Culture app uses pattern recognition to recognise face patterns and understand characteristics of your face. The app basically looks for properties such as — beards, glasses, and few others to select relevant portraits from its database. The app, apart from finding the nearest match also shows the overall percentage of visual similarity between the face and the artwork.
The app went viral soon after it was launched in the US. Commenting on the Indian release of the selfie feature, a Google spokesperson noted, “Looking at the success in the US, we are excited to roll this feature to other countries, including India.”
Google Arts and Culture selfie feature connects you with over 6,000 exhibitions, from more than 1,500 museum partners across 70 countries, as claimed by Google.
