Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute student wins IET’s unique engineering presentation competition

The Institution of Engineering and Technology(IET), announced Usama Tariq Rashid of Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute as the winner of the Chennai regional round of ‘Present round the World (PATW) 2014’ competition with a cash prize of Rs. 8,000. Usama’s presented on UTR – Steering wheel. Usama Tariq Rashid, will be one among the seven finalists to represent India at the South Asia finals, to be held in New Delhi, where there will be representation from India and Sri Lanka.

PATW is a presentation competition organised by the IET for engineering professionals between the age group of 18 to 26 years. The thrust is more on the presentation skills of the participants than technical content. Participants are required to make a ten-minute technical presentation on any subject related to engineering and technology, followed by a Q&A session with an expert panel of judges. The international championship, held in London every year, brings together winners from across 36 countries to compete in the finals held in London, UK for a cash prize of £1,000, in November 2014.

The regional finals in Chennai, held at the MGR University, Chennai, witnessed over xx young engineers vying for the top honours. The panel of judges comprised of Mr.Clement Fernando,CEO-Born to Fly.( Personality Skills Evaluator), Dr.Murali Krishna, Professor, AMS Engineering College and M Vijaya kumar,Vice President, Voltech engineering Pvt.Ltd.

Speaking at the occasion Shekhar Sanyal, Country Head and Director, IET Indiasaid, “Indian higher education system predominantly focuses on building technical skills of the engineering students with a minimal focus on soft skills which play a critical role in shaping their careers. In today’s scenario, engineers are not restricted to technical roles but are also assigned managerial responsibilities. It is vital that engineering students focus on skills beyond technical domain and with the mission to inspire excellence in engineering and technology, IET’s unique offerings such as PATW competition helps provide them a platform to excel in technical as well as presentation skills. It also helps to create a platform for knowledge sharing and offers networking opportunities.”

The PATW is one of the most awaited and exciting international events organised by the IET, which hosts a series of other events such as lectures, seminars, conferences and contests to introduce engineers to the future of science and technology. The professional body, one of the largest in the world, works to promote the positive role of science, engineering and technology amongst the engineering community.
