Indian multinational telecommunications services company, Bharti Airtel in collaboration with Apple and other phone makers have launched 4G Data Services in the city of Chandigarh. In this way, Chandigarh (including SAS Nagar and Panchkula) now becomes the second city in India to offer 4G services on mobile after Bangalore.

Currently, customers can avail of 4G services on four phone models, namely, Apple iPhone 5S (models A1530 & A1518) and 5C (models A1529 & A1516), Xolo LT 900 and LG G2 (model D802T). Users have to simply upgrade their existing SIM to a 4G SIM and select from any 4G plan or pack to avail the services. While, prepaid customers (existing/new) can select from a number of affordable 4G packs, postpaid customers need to opt for an Airtel myPlan and then select myPacks/myBoosters with 4G benefits. Under the plans, data browsing will be on high-speed 4G network. Voice calls will however be routed on the regular 2G network.

Meanwhile, Reliance Industries Ltd has also stepped up efforts to start 4G telecom services in the country. The company has been in the process of running trials, including phone and TV services, on its 4G network for quite sometime now. During the initial trials officials of Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) claim to have achieved broadband speed that are 10-12 times faster than 3G services. RJIL holds pan-India broadband wireless access spectrum as also airwaves in the 1800MHz band (2G spectrum). The company plans to use both the technologies to provide services.
