Mobile Phone New External Human Organ

A friend of mine recently quoted to me, he lost his Mobile phone for a while and till he got it back he felt as if he lost a vital body part ! Well, it’s true with many of us, Mobile phones whether we like it or not has become a part of our body. If it’s missing we feel isolated, If it’s not ringing for a long time, we will check our phone, ” something wrong? ” No doubt, Mobile phone revolution is probably the most important tech development of the past two decades.
Incidentally, I started my Sales career in Mobile phone Industry during late 90’s and it was really tough selling a Mobile phone connection those days since it was a concept selling. I still remember the then C.E.O of Escotel Mobile Communications Ltd., Mr.Manoj Kohli’s words, ” A day will come where our people will not be able to live their lives without Mobile phones ” . Time proved it – we are addicted to Mobile phones and today with the advent of mobile phones and international connectivity, the world is indeed shrinking rather making ” geography a history “!
It’s true that mobile communication provides many benefits, including convenience, flexibility and personal security, but sometimes it can be intrusive to others. One of the biggest social issues with Mobile phones is privacy. The fact is, we have become so accustomed to using our phones for everyday tasks – talking to friends, running our business, keeping up to date with news, events etc. But we don’t realize that, Mobile phones are at times a distraction for us and others. I fear, an epidemic of inconsiderate Mobile phone use has given the device a bad reputation.
At times, Mobile phones turn people into rude non-connective human beings. Text messaging, E-mail, Internet – Mobile phone capabilities are amazing, however, many people have forgotten their manners when they use Mobile phones. Look around – A Rude Mobile phone user is everywhere – driving in cars, walking on the street, in Cafes and Restaurants and even at the adjacent cubicle at work place.
We live in a time where, many of us need to answer calls when they come in, no matter where or when because people expect us to answer their calls. We even need to make calls no matter where or when because people are expecting us to be able to carry on our business no matter where we are. The fact is some people use their Mobile phones politely and effectively. But some need a helping hand. Often without realizing it, some phone owners alienate and irritate those around them by the way they use their Mobile phones.
Mobile phone rings in Cinema Theatres, Restaurants and other public places are really annoying the people around. On the other hand unsolicited calls from Telemarketing Executives have become a nuisance for every single Mobile phone user.
I guess it’s time for us to use Mobile phones with certain degree of etiquette especially in places where we might appear impolite if we use or even when our Mobile phone rings. The underlying principle of any good manners is the thoughtful consideration of the interests and feelings of others. Given with the fact that, Mobile phone has become the most important business communication tool, we need to understand, if we don’t set proper etiquette, it can lead to misunderstandings, bad impressions, anger and some times embarrassment.
In this article let me try to explore the Mobile phone etiquette, discovering that it is as often our unconscious actions that are bad manners, as our more obvious errors.
1. Know the basics : Be prepared when we answer the call or make a call – before we even touch the phone. Speak clearly that the other person can hear our voice properly. Always stick to the subject than wasting time beating around the bush. Most importantly, know how to use the equipment properly. Saying, ” sorry, I haven’t a clue how to use this phone ” or cutting someone off mid-sentence are signs of incompetence.
2. Have presence of mind : Be always alert. Let’s don’t stay on the phone and ignore someone waiting to talk to us. Take a call only if it won’t interrupt. Generally, don’t accept calls during lunch, dinner, a movie or when we are in an important meeting. Excuse ourselves if we must take a call. Remember to carry on one conversation at a time. Let’s don’t attempt to talk on the phone and with another person simultaneously.
3. Have control when we talk in public places : Let’s keep our volume under control. If we are a loud talker, then we will need to learn how to speak quietly on the phone. Remember, the whole world isn’t interested in our phone conversation, so the less of it they can hear, the better ! Never speak on our phone in a public place while on speaker phone .Turn off our Mobile phone before entering Movie Theaters, Worship places, Restaurants, Public Transportation or any other place where it may be irritating and disruptive to others. If we don’t wish to turn it off it’s better to set our phone’s ringer to vibration or silent mode.
4. Respect others time & privacy : Let’s not make or take calls while we are out to dinner with others. It is so rude to be on the phone when we are at dinner with others. Think about how we would feel if someone invited us over to their house for dinner and then they proceed to talk on the phone throughout the whole dinner. It is also important that, we don’t continuously check our phone while out with others. Checking our Mobile phone repeatedly while we are out with others will leave them feeling like we have something better to do. Another important thing, some people don’t like to be photographed. When using a camera phone it’s important to respect the rights of others and not to intrude on their privacy.
5. Ring tone – Make it pleasant : We know unattended Mobile phones and left to ring out with annoying jingles, both cause major distractions especially in public places and offices. I read recently that, irritating Mobile phone rings have been voted the top ten workplace annoyances ! It is better to set the ring tone at a low level with a tune that is soft, gentle or put it in to vibration / silent mode in any situation like a Worship place, a Hospital or a School or a Meeting where a ringing sound would prove disturbing to other people.
6. One thing at a time – No Multi-Tasking : Among us, some people are better at juggling many tasks at the same time than others, but there are some things in life that deserve our full attention. The busy person multi-tasking at a desk can be a wonderful model of efficiency, handling – phone, keyboard, coffee cup and remote control all at the same time, but at other times, multi-tasking can be hazardous, rude and inefficient. Talking over phone and doing several things together will invite error in all the things we do and it’s better to avoid it.
7. Switch off Mobile phone where it is prohibited to use : It goes without saying inside Aircraft it is mandatory to switch off our Mobile phones. We will almost certainly be reminded by the cabin crew, we must switch off our mobile phone since Aircraft contain electronic devices, some of which may be sensitive to interference. People are asked to switch off mobiles in some areas of Hospitals, as a precaution to avoid interference with sensitive equipment’s. There could be several other places where the Mobile phones are prohibited to use, watch the board, follow the law !
8. Avoid Mobile phone while driving : It’s said that Mobile phones can kill. No, I am not talking about frying our brain by constantly using it. I am talking about using our phones while driving. It can be a killer. People using Mobile phones while driving are much less attentive to the road and road conditions rather we can say they have one ear and eye on their conversation and one on the road ! Remember, it can kill them & us !
9. Time – No Mobile phone before it’s time : The question is, do we really want to be accessible for anyone and everyone on a twenty-four/seven basis? The fact is, the more available we make ourselves; the more available everybody will anticipate us to be. By making ourselves available day in and day out, we create our own nightmare! It’s better to fix the time when to turn the phone on or off. The Mobile phone will continue chasing us on all the time in all places regardless of the situation. Remember, we need some private time with our family with out the disturbance of calls.
Hope you feel that the above thoughtful use of our Mobile phone – or in other words the correct Mobile phone etiquette – is important both in considering others and helping to keep us and those around us happy and safe. I also feel it’s time for the Mobile Service Operators to provide a leaflet on Mobile phone etiquette along with the regular Mobile phone user / service manual.
No doubt, worldwide the Mobile phone users are growing fast and today the Mobile phone is not just a communication gadget, but a Music System, a Digital Camera, a Mini Computer with Internet connectivity, and it’s even a Television. All these features eliminates the need for carrying different gadgets and no wonder it has become an external human body part for many of us !
When the whole world is getting connected and more and more people are getting hooked to Mobile phones, don’t you think it is important for us to realize that being unmannered isn’t part of modernness? Let’s abide by certain degree of etiquette, which will be really useful to us and our society. We can’t let the Mobile phone etiquette to be a forgotten concept any more and we need to help every Mobile phone users to use it politely and effectively.

Managing Change and being flexible in life.

Our days are filled with commitment towards profession, family, friends, social activities etc. So the point is we need to be very flexible and responsive to the changes that are happening in our day to day life.

Flexibility means being able to respond to change and deal with it. It’s a trait any of us can learn and it’s one that is critical to our success in managing any type of change. Yet being flexible isn’t easy.We have to work at and practice flexibility daily. We have to choose daily to remain adaptable. Below are some ways I think we can remain flexible.

Top Ten Ways to Remain Flexible:

1) Accept the change: Normally when we’re required to be flexible it’s because something has changed that we didn’t plan for. Accepting the change, whether it’s good or bad, is the first step towards remaining flexible.

2) Access needed support: When we’re going through changes in life or at work – we need support. The better we are at accessing support, the better we’ll be at remaining flexible.

3) Maintain perspective: Maintain a positive perspective no matter what the situation. There’s always something good that can come out of every change – be willing to look for it.

4) Be realistic: Set your expectations realistically. When dealing with changes you may have to lower your expectations of yourself for a time.

5) Prioritize: Do only that which needs to be done. It will all get done eventually but during major changes – focus only what is critical.

6) Let go: You can not control every thing in life. Letting go of what you can not control will make managing change much easier.

7) Be quiet: During change lie is often chaotic. Take time away from work or family life to just be quiet. Solutions and creative ideas for managing change often come in quiet moments.

8) Know that it will pass: Tough times and stressful times happen but they do not last forever. Realize the change you are going through is just a season and it will pass.

9) Sleep, Eat and Take Care of Yourself: Focus on the basics during times of change. Change often brings stress and the best way to deal with stress is to make sure you are taking good care of yourself. Remember whining is not a solution 🙂

10) Find Humor: There is humor in all of life – the good, the bad and the ugly. believe me – It makes a lot of difference guys 🙂

“If you do not bend in the wind – you will break!” – author unknown

Hope the above tips may help you to develop excellence in being flexible. Take care, do give your valuable feedback’s and have a great week end !

The Difference Between Being a Success and a Successful Life

I was reading an article the other day about a famous athlete and one of his teammates made a comment that I found interesting. He said, off the record of course, that his famous teammate would have a funeral so small that it could be held in a fitting room.

Now, most people would consider this athlete “successful.” He is rich beyond anyone’s imagination. He has and will set world records. He will undoubtedly be elected into his Hall of Fame, most likely on the first ballot.

But he is not a successful human being. It is common knowledge that he is universally disliked.

This got me to thinking. I am attending two funerals this week. One is the funeral of a man who was “successful” in the eyes of the world. That is, he made a lot of money. But he wasn’t a terribly successful human being. He was estranged from his oldest son and hadn’t spoken with him in years. He was a borderline alcoholic. There were other storms in his life. About 50 people will attend.

The other funeral is for a man who was not “successful” in the eyes of the world. You would have never given him a second look had you seen him in the store. He wasn’t wealthy. He was not high-profile. Yet he was quite a successful human being. People were encouraged and built up by this man. People were better because he graced their lives, even in small ways. His funeral will have about 200 people there, paying their last respects. He would have never guessed there would be that many, yet after he died, people came out of the woodwork to speak highly of him.

So what is the difference? And can we be both “successful” and a successful human being. I believe that we can have both. I do believe it is hard because the accumulation of wealth takes time and time at work, which usually takes away from time doing things that foster human relationships. But it is possible.

It can be done by those who understand balanced living and are aggressive time and priority managers. Give yourself time to make your fortune or pursue your dreams, but give yourself time to make yourself a successful life as well.

Here are some tips for being a successful human being who has a successful life:

Love People, Use Things. People who become “successful” and miss a successful life are those who love things and use people. Be sure to put people as a priority for your life.

Take time off. Life isn’t just about work. There is so much else to experience here in this life, and unfortunately, too little time to enjoy it.

Be a giver. Be someone who gives more than takes. Yes, we all have to take from time to time, but we should take only when we need to and give every time we have a chance to!

Be a life-long learner. I truly believe that we become better people as we learn. Take time throughout your life to grow and learn and become a better person.

Keep a sense of humor. People who laugh are a gift to the world. Don’t take yourself or your circumstances to seriously. Learn to look on the bright side and see the humor in situations.

Honor your commitments. This is a key to a successful life. We live this life based on commitments we make toward one another. Those who honor those commitments are those who will be respected and trusted by others.

Mentor someone. Always take the time to mentor someone. I know this firsthand because of the energy a few people put into my life, sometimes just letting me know that they believed in me. This goes a long way and makes the world a better place!

I am sure there are other aspects of a successful life, but these are the simple ones that you can begin to apply today. Remember, you can work and become a success, and I encourage you to do so, but don’t forget to live a successful life as well!

7 Tips of starting a successful business 🙂

As someone who has been called a serial entrepreneur, I’ve had more than my fair share of experience starting new enterprises, turning around underperforming enterprises or re-vamping operations.

During that time, I’ve learned a thing or two about some critical factors you absolutely need to know before you jump into the proverbial entrepreneurial waters.

In the majority of cases, start-up success or failure is all about knowing the both the how and the why of taking action, and always being clear about which steps to take next.

To help this process, here are 10 essential things you need to know about running a successful business. Use it as a checklist to make sure your thinking and your business plan are on the right track, or if you need to get more information, strategic education or clarity for yourself on your overall vision, your market, or your product or service.

  1. Offer what people want to buy, not just what you want to sell. Too often, people jump into a business built around a product or service they think will be successful, rather than one that is already proven to have a market. What do I mean?Instead of creating and selling a new sports shoe with the latest trendy design and materials, you’d be much better off from a business perspective to focus on shoe category generally (a proven category because which people buy shoes every day) and then focus more specifically on the niche of high performance sports shoes, (which you may even sell in a section of a shoe retail outlet). Better to have a small slice of a large category than a large slice of no market at all.
  2. Get cash flowing ASAP. Cash flow is the lifeblood of business, and is absolutely essential to feed bottom-line profits. So you need to find ways to jump start cash flow immediately. How do you do that? In a professional services business, you can ask for deposits on work up-front, with balances due on delivery. You can do the same in retail, especially on high-ticket or specialty item and position it as an added value and a way to insure delivery by a specific date. You can also add value to generic items by creating private labels, and develop continuity programs where customers pay an up-front monthly fee to insure delivery or availability of items they will buy on a repeat basis. Of course, the key is to make sure there is little or no gap between when you pay for labor, stock inventory and when you actually get paid. Ideally, you’ll find ways to get money up front, and your cash gap will never be an issue.
  3. Always find new ways to keep costs low. All the cash flow in the world is worthless if it’s not positive cash flow, which means you have to bring in more cash than you pay out.To do this, you need to keep your costs and expenses low. We’ve touched on this before, especially in terms of outfitting a startup. The main idea is to never pay retail , and look for used or gently used items to furnish your office or your retail space.Paying vendors up front also gives you leverage for negotiating better prices. Especially in this economic environment, where credit is at a premium, vendors are more willing than ever to find creative ways to finance transactions, and that is a trend will likely continue over time.So do some extra work and research now to discover how owners and vendors are finding ways to work out deals, and you just may hit on whole new ways of doing business.
  4. When planning, always overestimate expenses and underestimate revenues. I was trained as an accountant, so the numbers side of business is part of my entrepreneurial DNA, and was also a big part of my early business education. That said, I’ve never seen a startup business where expenses were at least 30 percent more than initially planned or anticipated, and revenues are at least that much less.Being conservative in your numbers doesn’t mean you are willing to accept those numbers, it just means you are arming yourself with information you can work with and work over. It means you can gauge the kinds of efforts and activities you will need to put into sales and marketing.
  5. Focus on sales and marketing manically. In business, nothing happens until a sale is made. From the jump, you’ll need to find a good way to get leads, convert leads into sales, and make sure you keep getting repeat sales from your customers. The way to do this is to find or create a marketing and sales funnel system that you can work, test, measure; one that anyone in your company can utilize.Too many entrepreneurs focus on getting their brand right before they start to generate leads. That is exactly the wrong way to go about business. Leads are always more important than your brand, so don’t waste money getting your brand right at the expense of spending that same money to buy new customers.Soon, you’ll discover you can build your brand from the ground up, versus spending years and hundred of thousands of dollars building it from the top down. Don’t presume you’ll even survive that long, because without leads, you won’t!
  6. Find ways to exponentially increase profits. In business, there are five drivers that impact profits. If you can master them while keeping your costs in check, you will run a successful business. It’s as simple as getting more leads, converting more leads into customers, increasing the number of times those customers buy from you, increasing the average price point of your sales and increasing your profit margins.Do any one of those, while also keeping costs down, you will see more profits. Do all of them and you will see your business really take off.
  7. Test and measure everything. You can’t change what you don’t measure, and you can’t tell if a program or strategy is working if you are not faithfully testing, measuring and tracking your results.Another way to look at this is to think in terms of doctors. Most like to get baseline stats of your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing before they delve into identifying symptoms or recommending corrective courses of action. The same is true in your business. Why keep literally throwing money away on an ad campaign that costs thousands of dollars but doesn’t bring any people through the door?

The Magic of Thinking Big

Ever since I read David J. Schwartz’s ” The Magic of Thinking Big “, i wanted to write on this topic. It’s one of the best books I have come across which tells us ‘ how to set our goals high and then to exceed them ‘, in a nut shell, ‘ The Power of Thinking Big ‘.

The question is if Thinking Big accomplishes so much, why doesn’t everyone think that way? The answer is simple, all of us, more than we recognize, are in the midof lot of negative influence every day everywhere. And no wonder, our thinking is small, not big ! All around us is an environment that is trying to tug us, trying to pull us down. It has often been said that ‘ bigger is not always better ‘. Some might say it’s true when considering the current economic situation, but I feel it is never true when it comes to new ideas or personal dreams where thinking big is always better. We can achieve success only by believing we can succeed.

I have seen several young executives joining for new jobs. Each of them “wishes”, someday he will achieve success by reaching the top. But majority of these young people simply don’t have the belief that they can reach the top and they don’t reach the top. But a small number of these young people really believe they will succeed. They approach their work with the ” I am going to the top ” attitude, and they reach the top. What differentiate these two sets of people is their attitude.

I read a survey recently on the the power of thinking big. It says Seventy-five percent of respondents whom they approached agreed that they don’t think big enough about their work or business, and of those that do have big dreams, 75% of respondents indicated that they lack the follow-through in order to make them happen. Further, over 85% of respondents noted that they don’t know where to start or what steps to take to make them happen.

Let me share with you what David J. Schwartz’s point of view on ‘ How to use the Magic of Thinking Big in Life’s Most Crucial Situations ‘. It’s for sure that, there is some magic in thinking big. But it’s equally true that, we forget it easily. When we hit some rough spots there is a danger that, our thinking will shrink in size. And when it does, we lose! Below are some brief guides for staying big when we are tempted to use the small approach :

1) When People Try to Drive us Down, THINK BIG. Be sure, there are some people who want us to lose, but these people can’t hurt us if we refuse to fight petty people. Fighting with them reduces us to their size. Feel sorry for them. Let’s Stay Big.

2) When That ” We- Haven’t- Got -What -It -Takes ” Feeling Creeps Up On Us, THINK BIG. Remember, if we think we are weak, we are. If we think we are inadequate, we are. Avoid that natural tendency to see ourselves as small. Iet’s feel that, we are important.

3) When an Argument or Quarrel Seems Inevitable, THINK BIG. We need to successfully resist the temptation to argue and quarrel. Think Big Enough to see that quarrels and arguments, will never help us to get where we want to go.

4) When we Feel Defeated, THINK BIG. It is not possible to achieve large success without hardships and setbacks. But it is possible to live the rest of our lives without defeat. Think Big Enough to see that defeat is a state of mind, nothing more.

5) When we Feel Our Progress on the Job is Slowing Down, THINK BIG. No matter what we do and regardless of our occupation, higher status and higher pay comes from one thing: Increasing the quality and quantity of our output. Think, ” We can do better “. Nothing in this world is being done as well as it could be. And when we think, ” We can do better “, ways to do better will appear.

So friends, let’s have big ideas / dreams and say them out loud. Let’s visualize ourselves successfully bringing our idea or dream to life. Think, What will we look like? How will we feel? Where we will be? Let’s establish goals for how we will go about achieving them and determine what action steps will help us to move forward. And above all, let’s select one action step and do it today!

When it comes to thinking big, remember the words of Mother Theresa, “The biggest person with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest person with the smallest mind. Think big anyway.” So, what are we waiting for?

Way to Successful Business

After many stressful days and sleepless nights, your business has finally become a reality. Now you are faced with the big question, “Will my business be a success?” While only time will truly tell, there are five simple ways to gauge whether or not your business is on the path to success.

  1. Profit
Profitability is probably the first thing people think about when measuring success. Is the business making money? This is fairly common sense — if there is money left after you have paid your monthly operating expenses and debt, then things are looking pretty good. However, if you find your bottom line is continually red, your chances of success begin to dwindle.
  2. A growing customer base
In addition to profitability, a growing customer base is a sure sign that you are effectively reaching your target market, and reaching your target market is what your business is all about. Without a vibrant customer base, your success will be limited, at best. The long-term growth of your company is tied directly to your ability to not only reach your customer base, but to expand it to accommodate your long-term goals. All of those long hours spent on the research and development of a marketing strategy prove themselves here. Did your research pay off?
  3. Customer satisfaction
Customer satisfaction is an indication that your company understands the needs of your customers. Understanding your customers and being able to satisfy their needs is crucial to the strength of your business. Just remember, one unsatisfied customer can negate the promotional impact of several satisfied customers. Having strong customer service polices will add to the success of your company.
  4. Employee satisfaction
Employee satisfaction is another key indicator of business success. Developing a work environment that rewards employees for their hard work is imperative in attracting and retaining quality employees. If workers know they are appreciated, they are much more likely to go the extra mile when needed. Employees are an indispensable part of your business. They are the face that greets your customers. Do everything within your power to make sure that face is a smiling one.
  5. Owner satisfaction
Perhaps the most important measure of business success is whether you — the owner — are satisfied with the results of business ownership. Dissatisfaction is contagious. If you’re not happy with your business, it won’t be long before your dissatisfaction begins to affect the employees and even the customers. Every once in a while, carve out time for a reality check. Identify the sources of your dissatisfaction and make the necessary changes before it’s too late.

Can We Motivate Employees through Recognition?

Through out my career, I was reminded of how important recognition is in the workplace and in life. We want recognition, we thrive on it and it makes us feel good. Yet most of us do not give or receive enough of it.

I have talked to many of my friends on this topic who are employers or employees at various levels in different industries and most of them said one of the most important things employees wanted is recognition. They want to be appreciated, applauded and recognized for the contributions they make in the company. Yet sadly recognition is something most employees feel they don’t receive – at least not often enough.
Employee recognition is not just a nice thing to do for people. Employee recognition is a communication tool that reinforces and rewards the most important outcomes people create for business. As leaders we know that the secret to success is being able to draw out and encourage employees to be their best. Recognizing the strengths and contributions of those around us and taking the time to let them know how important they are is critical to organizational success. Human beings live and grow with praise.

Most employees say that they would love more money but what they want most is to be appreciated and recognized. Yet it is not happening in the workplace. Why are we hesitant to give recognition? Why do we keep the positive things to ourselves? Why do we believe recognition is someone else’s job? The answer is very interesting, with my experience, I have understood, the following things prevent our Leaders to recognize their Employees.

 1) It’s scary. Giving recognition and praise is risky.

2) Employees might get a big head and stop working so hard. The opposite is actually true – employees will work harder when they know they are appreciated.

 3) We don’t have time. I know we are all busy but that’s no excuse – we must make the time.

4) We don’t know how to do it. There are thousands of resources available. Google “employee recognition” and we will find lots of information to help us recognize the people we work with.

 5) It’s not our job. Recognition is management’s job. While I agree management needs to recognize their employees but we all can make a difference by recognizing and letting our coworkers know how much we appreciate them. Recognition is everyone’s job!

6) We are not good with people. But we can learn – we all can. Attend a seminar, read a book and practice.

 7) They will come to expect praise if we give it too often. I do believe we can praise too often if we always keep it real. Fake praise or recognition will never work.
 8) We don’t see anything to recognize. Watch, listen and ask questions. The best way to recognize others is to be a good observer. All employees have some merits for which they can be recognized for.

9) It’s hard. Yes it can be hard and it takes time. Yet the rewards will outweigh whatever time and effort it takes.

 10) We should get it first. The best way to begin the cycle of recognition is to be the one to give it. Recognition is contagious – and it may just come back to us!

Recognition takes time and commitment. Recognition is a life long journey both in our professional and personal lives. The better we are at recognizing others – the more excellence we’ll have in business and in life.

As our day goes by, let’s watch and listen for ways to recognize our fellow employees & friends. Look for ways we can applaud, appreciate or affirm them. Take the job of recognition seriously and go make someone’s day. Sometimes a simple ‘ thank you ‘ is just the encouragement someone needs. And at other times its just a ‘smile’. Whatever it is – let’s do something to recognize someone today.

Let me conclude with a smile !

Concentration ” – The Key to Success!

Our world has become busier and busier with more TV Stations, Radio Stations, Websites, E-mails, Mobile Phones and other forms of interruptions in the daily life. We become overwhelmed with new ways of simplifying life, but in reality the so called time saving devises end up chewing up more and more of our time. End of the day all of us say, we wanted to be successful but not able to focus on anything!

One of the secrets to success is what I want to share with you in this article so that we can understand this ‘ quiet and powerful ‘ tool the successful people have been using to climb the ladder of great achievement. We don’t need to be extraordinary and super natural to apply this key. Ordinary people like me and you have already used it knowingly or unknowingly to achieve extraordinary results several times.

This magic key is ” Concentration “. It is a 13 lettered word. Very simple but powerful. It has a tremendous power that transforms life like a tornado in action. Concentration has been defined as “the ability to direct one’s thinking in whatever direction one would intend”.

Success and failures are part of the progress in life. However success and failures have to be handled differently. It is also to be observed that despite the differences in the way the two are to be handled, there are some aspects, which one needs to consider which are common to both. One of the key common factors for both success and failure is Concentration.

Successive failures some times makes one to think of the failures there by preventing one from bringing back the focus to the task.

This can be amply seen in our cricketing world, which most of us are familiar. There have been several instances, when batsmen after achieving a milestone like having scored a century, a double hundred, tend to throw away their wicket. This is due to the sudden shift in the focus from continuing the task, to the happiness of success. Similarly, the failures of capable batsmen were mainly due to the lack of concentrationand letting their thoughts drift to those aspects not relevant to the game or failures that have gone behind.

Few months back I had the opportunity to attend a workshop conducted by”Custommerce“, on ‘ strategies for a customer-driven economy ‘ at Hotel Leela Kempinski, Kovalam. One of the Speakers was the eight – time world Billiards Champion Geeth Sethi who talked about concentration drawing an example from the world of sport to illustrate the power of concentration. It is indeed an inspiring story and let me share it with you.

Ever heard of James Wattana? He was the former billiards champion from Thailand nicknamed ‘Thai-Phoon’. It was the 1991 NEC England World Billiards Championship final. Wattana, just 16 and half years old, is playing Jimmy White of the United Kingdom. The Thai is playing brilliantly and is leading seven frames to one, supremely confident. Suddenly his game drops and before you know it Jimmy White has stormed back to level with Wattana. In the last frame, Wattana just falls apart and White wins the championship 8-7!

Asked later what happened, Wattana said that his mind wandered to a particular street in Bangkok and of a £200,000 house he wanted to buy for his mother. “So, here he was, in the finals, but his mind was several thousand miles away. By the time he regained his focus it was too late,” explains Geeth Sethi.

But the young Wattana went back and put in continuous practice for next five years. During 1997, the same Wattana, ready for another final at British Open, is told just before he is to play that his father has been shot dead in Bangkok! Wattana goes on to play, all focus and concentration, emotions in check; he demolishes his opponent in just one hour, that too five frames to nil and then gives vent to his feelings! That’s the power of concentration.

James Wattana, says Sethi, constantly reined in his mind. “You need to rein in your mind even when the pressure is on, even though you heard disturbing news; you need to concentrate on what you need to do.The mind is a funny thing, it has a mind of its own and needs control by constant training. At the moment of truth you need to be there “.

This tells us, concentration can improve with constant habits and training.Concentration will be required to retain ones focus while reaping success and also to bring back the lost focus due to failures. We all have the ability to concentrate. But at times our thoughts are scattered, and our minds race from one thing to another. To deal with such times, we need to learn and practice concentration skills and strategies. To concentrate, we have to learn a skill, and as with any skill this means practice repeated day after day until we achieve enough improvement to feel that we can concentrate when we need to.

Our ability to concentrate depends on :

1. Our Commitment : We need to make a personal commitment to put in the effort needed to do the task in the way which we realistically plan to do it. If we just play at it in a half-hearted manner then it is much more difficult to take the task and ourselves seriously.

2. Our Enthusiasm for the task : If we are interested in the task and enjoy doing it, then we find it easy to motivate ourselves to start. Once started, our feelings of involvement in the activity keep us going – we want to do it.

3. Skill at doing the task : Knowing how to do something gives confidence that our efforts will be successful, so we don’t have to deal with anxiety whether this will work or not. Anxiety tends to impair concentration.

4. Our Emotional and physical state : When we are in good physical condition – i.e. feeling rested, relaxed and comfortable – and our emotions are calm, then we tend to be positive about things. This in turn raises self-esteem, which makes us more able to concentrate, if only because we don’t have to worry about how awful we are or life is.

5. Our Psychological state : For example, if we are in an obsessional or distracted state our thoughts are pre-occupied, leaving little mental space to think about anything else.

6. Our Environment : It is much more difficult to concentrate if our surroundings keep intruding on our awareness, perhaps because it is noisy, too hot or too cold, the furniture is uncomfortable or the people around us are stressing out.

To conclude, it goes with out saying concentration helps us to solve problems and come up with the fastest path to attain our goals. It is very difficult to succeed without concentration. A mind that concentrates is a beautiful mind. It is a mind that will get results and give us power to overcome challenges.

Remember the mystical words of Jesus: “Whatsoever thing you desire when you pray, pray as if you had already received and you shall have.”

We all have different levels of concentration. Concentration can be improved through practice and avoiding distractions. Don’t you feel concentration is indeed the Magical Key to Success ? The question is how will you improve your concentration today?

Managing Change & Being Flexible in Life

An article with the following quote as caption at Economic Times Ascent made me to think and write on an interesting topic, “Managing Change & Being Flexible in Life”.
” The great thing about human beings is that they can change. If you can get up every day, stay optimistic, and believe the future is better than the past, those few things get you through a lot ”
– Jeff Immelt, CEO, GE

8) Know that it will pass:
Tough times and stressful times happen but they do not last forever.

“If you do not bend in the wind – you will break!”

Hope the above tips may help you to develop excellence in being flexible. Take care, do give your valuable feedback’s and have a great week !
