AI is enhancing the threat posed by cyber criminals through tools such as FraudGPT

In the backdrop of the annual World Economic Forum at Davos, leaders in the cybersecurity domain discussed the formidable challenges faced by law enforcement agencies, particularly in light of the ever-expanding realm of cybercrime. INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock emphasized the ongoing struggle, attributing it to the pervasive influence of cutting-edge technologies such as AI and deepfakes.

Stock pointed out that law enforcement agencies worldwide are grappling with a crisis spurred by the escalating volume of cybercrime. Despite efforts to raise awareness about fraud, he noted a paradoxical trend where increased vigilance resulted in the discovery of more fraud cases. According to Stock, the prevalence of cyber-related crime is reaching unprecedented levels, propelled by the multitude of devices connected through the internet. He stated, “Crime only knows one direction, up. The more we are raising awareness, the more cases you discover. Most cases have an international dimension.”

In the discussion, the panel also shed light on the malevolent application of technology, specifically mentioning FraudGPT, an ominous iteration of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. Stock highlighted the concerning trend of cybercriminals organizing themselves based on expertise within an underground network. Moreover, he revealed the existence of a rating system employed by these malicious actors, enhancing the reliability of their illicit services.

### Understanding FraudGPT

FraudGPT is an AI chatbot that exploits generative models to produce realistic and coherent text. Operating by generating content in response to user prompts, it enables hackers to craft convincing messages with the potential to deceive individuals into taking actions they would not ordinarily consider.

### Operation of FraudGPT

Similar to other AI-powered chatbots, FraudGPT is a language model trained on extensive text data, allowing it to generate human-like responses to user queries. Cybercriminals exploit this technology to create deceptive content for various malicious purposes:

1. **Phishing Scams:** Generating authentic-looking phishing emails, text messages, or websites to trick users into revealing sensitive information.
2. **Social Engineering:** Imitating human conversation to build trust and lead unsuspecting users to disclose sensitive information or perform harmful actions.
3. **Malware Distribution:** Creating deceptive messages that lure users into clicking on malicious links or downloading harmful attachments, resulting in malware infections.
4. **Fraudulent Activities:** Assisting hackers in creating fraudulent documents, invoices, or payment requests, leading individuals and businesses to fall victim to financial scams.

### Risks of AI in Cybersecurity

While AI has undoubtedly enhanced cybersecurity tools, it has also introduced new risks. Cybersecurity threats, such as brute force, denial of service (DoS), and social engineering attacks, have evolved with the incorporation of AI. Stock highlighted that even individuals with limited technological knowledge can carry out Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, expanding the scope of cyber threats.

The risks associated with artificial intelligence in cybersecurity are poised to escalate rapidly as AI tools become more affordable and accessible.

### Safeguarding Against FraudGPT

As the prevalence of AI chatbots grows, it becomes crucial to adopt proactive measures to guard against fraudulent activities. Vigilance and staying informed are paramount. By implementing robust cybersecurity practices, individuals and businesses can fortify their defenses against emerging dangers, thereby contributing to a safer digital environment for all.
