AI Impact Summit 2026: MeitY Unveils Open-Source VoicERA Voice AI Stack on BHASHINI Infrastructure

At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) introduced VoicERA, an open-source, end-to-end Voice AI stack deployed on the BHASHINI National Language Infrastructure. The launch marks a significant advancement in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure for multilingual voice technologies.

The initiative, led by Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division, was developed in partnership with the EkStep Foundation, Centre for Open Source Software at IIIT Bengaluru, and AI4Bharat. VoicERA’s architecture is designed to be open, modular, interoperable, cloud-deployable and ready for on-premises use, enabling secure and scalable deployment across government departments, research institutions and innovation ecosystems.

By establishing a national execution layer for voice and language AI, VoicERA expands BHASHINI’s capabilities beyond text translation to include real-time speech systems, conversational AI and multilingual telephony at population scale. This foundation enables the rapid creation of voice-enabled digital services in areas such as agriculture advisories, education support, citizen feedback, grievance redressal and scheme discovery.

The modular design helps reduce duplication of effort and avoids vendor lock-in, accelerating development and adoption of inclusive voice-based services nationwide. Officials said this move signifies a new era of voice-first digital infrastructure, empowering citizens to interact naturally with public services regardless of language barriers
