Realme Transitioning to Oppo’s ColorOS 17 in India to Streamline Software Development

In a major consolidation within the BBK Electronics ecosystem, Realme India has confirmed that its upcoming smartphones will phase out the standalone Realme UI interface. Moving forward, the brand’s next-generation hardware launches will come equipped with Oppo’s Android 17-based ColorOS 17 operating system right out of the box.

The strategy aims to lower overall research and development expenses while combating software redundancies. By integrating their underlying engineering resources with parent company Oppo, Realme intends to offer a vastly streamlined system update process and deliver more rapid Android security patches to end-users.

Upgrade Support for Existing Handsets

The unified software migration will not be restricted exclusively to unreleased smartphones. Realme has specified that the upcoming rollout will extend retroactively to currently active models that remain eligible for major system upgrades under the company’s existing lifecycle guarantees.

As a prominent example, the premium Realme GT 8 Pro—which debuted running the native Realme UI 7.0 platform alongside a commitment to four subsequent Android version upgrades—is slated to transition cleanly onto ColorOS 17. Subsequent platform versions will likewise follow the ColorOS update path.

Seamless Core User Experience

For everyday consumers, the software shift is projected to trigger minimal workflow disruptions. Realme UI has historically relied on a shared core architecture, overlapping feature sets, and visual assets adapted directly from Oppo’s software foundations. Furthermore, early generation Realme devices initially operated on ColorOS during the subsidiary’s inception in 2018, before separating to launch the customized “Realme UI” wrapper in early 2020.

Unchanged Corporate Infrastructure

While the software foundation is aligning directly with Oppo, the company emphasizes that this pivot is strictly a platform-level consolidation. Realme has formally clarified that its corporate structure, day-to-day operations, distribution pipelines, and general consumer-facing presence within the Indian marketplace will continue to function entirely independently.
