Hands-On: X by Xreal a01+ Establishes a Bright, Featherweight Baseline for Affordable AR Glasses

Wearable display pioneer Xreal is taking a sharp turn toward affordability with the launch of its new “X by Xreal” (xbx) sub-brand. The debut device, the xbx a01+, ditches the expensive spatial tracking processors and auto-dimming lenses found on premium models to focus entirely on mobile media consumption and gaming—delivering an exceptionally bright viewing experience at a highly competitive $299 price point.

A Discrete Design Built for Extended Wear

Physically, the xbx a01+ is one of the most low-profile pairs of prism display smart glasses on the market. Mirroring a casual pair of drugstore sunglasses with blue reflective lenses, the glasses eschew the bulky sunshades typical of competitors like the RayNeo Air 4 Pro. By stripping out built-in cameras and complex 3DoF tracking hardware, Xreal has crafted a true featherweight frame. Weighing just 62 grams (which drops to an astonishing 56 grams if you pop off the magnetic front frame entirely), the chassis sits comfortably on the face during long flights or extended commutes. For physical personalization, the package includes three different nose pad sizes, and the temples can click vertically between three fixed angles to perfectly align the internal display optics with the wearer’s eyes.

Stunning Visual Quality and Intelligent Real-Time Scaling

Despite its budget billing, the a01+ doesn’t compromise on display performance. The glasses project a massive virtual 147-inch display (measured at an equivalent 4-meter distance) using a pair of premium Sony micro-OLED panels. The displays boast a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 per eye, a buttery smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and an industry-leading peak brightness of 1,600 nits.

A dedicated onboard Pixelworks display controller provides native HDR10 rendering. More impressively, the glasses utilize real-time AI processing to upscale standard SDR video streams into vibrant, high-contrast HDR content on-the-fly. The visual pipeline is rounded out by a 0DoF spatial stabilization mode, which acts as a gentle image stabilizer to keep the virtual screen rock-steady even if the wearer is traveling on a bumpy train or plane. Furthermore, the lenses feature TÜV Rheinland’s highest 5-star Eye Comfort certification, minimizing long-term optical fatigue.

Seamless Connectivity and Simplified Controls

Designed for instant plug-and-play functionality, the a01+ connects directly via a custom green DisplayPort-over-USB-C cable to compatible hosts, including the iPhone 15/16/17 series, modern Android flagships, iPads, MacBooks, and handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck or ROG Ally. While it requires external battery docks to display video from the Nintendo Switch due to proprietary console firmware, it natively pairs with the Xreal Beam Pro to unlock more complex multi-window computing arrays.

Physical interaction is elegantly simplified. A tactile rocker on the right arm manages panel brightness with short presses and controls the built-in directional speakers via long presses. A secondary “X” action key opens up the onboard firmware settings with a double tap, or switches the glasses into SBS 3D mode when held down, allowing users to toggle through different viewing environments without opening an external smartphone app
