690 Million Indians will access 5G technology by 2028

According to a recent prediction made on Wednesday, 5G would represent about 53% of mobile subscriptions in India by the year 2028, when there will be 690 million users. By the end of this year, it is projected that India will have over 31 million 5G users as telecom providers like Jio and Airtel continue to roll out their services across the country.

According to the most recent “Ericsson Mobility Report,” the average data traffic per smartphone in the nation is expected to increase from 25GB per month in 2022 to roughly 54GB per month in 2028. In India, the proportion of smartphone subscriptions to all mobile subscriptions is predicted to increase from 77% this year to 94% in 2028. According to the analysis, the number of 4G subscriptions in India is predicted to reach a peak of approximately 930 million in 2024 before falling to an estimated 570 million by the year 2028.

“5G will play a crucial role in achieving India’s digital inclusion goals especially for bringing broadband to rural and remote homes,” said Nitin Bansal, Head of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions for South east Asia, Oceania and India, Ericsson. Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and fixed wireless access (FWA) are expected to be the early use-cases for 5G in India, “which will help address the concern of the limited fixed broadband penetration levels in the country and improve the data experience while on the move,” Bansal added.

The region of India now has the highest global average data traffic per smartphone. According to the analysis, total mobile data traffic in the India region is predicted to increase from 18 exabytes (EB) per month in 2022 to 53 EB per month in 2028, rising at a CAGR of 19%. Despite ongoing and anticipated economic difficulties in many parts of the world, the number of global 5G subscriptions is still expected to surpass one billion by the end of this year and five billion by the end of 2028. Between July and September 2022, around 110 million new subscriptions to 5G were added globally, bringing the total to approximately 870 million.
