YouTube Expands Free Picture-in-Picture Mode to Global Users

Key Details and Limitations

While the update democratizes a premium feature, there are specific guidelines regarding its use:

  • Content Restrictions: Free users outside the U.S. can only utilize PiP for long-form, non-music content.

  • Music Exclusion: To use PiP for music videos, a YouTube Premium subscription remains a requirement.

  • Premium Lite: Users on the Premium Lite tier will continue to have access to PiP for non-music, long-form videos.

How to Use and Manage PiP

Activating the feature is straightforward. While a compatible video is playing, users simply swipe up or press the home button to exit the app, which automatically transitions the video into a moveable mini-player.

If you prefer to disable the feature, it can be managed through both the app and device settings:

  • In-App: Navigate to Settings > Playback and toggle the Picture-in-Picture option.

  • Android Settings: Go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Advanced > Picture-in-Picture to enable or disable it at the system level.

This update is being deployed gradually and is expected to reach all compatible devices globally in the coming months.
