This feature, spotted in recent beta versions of the app, aims to enhance the multitasking experience for Android users by allowing them to maintain active conversations while using other applications.
The new interface introduces a floating shortcut that stays on the screen, providing immediate access to specific chats without requiring the user to switch back and forth between apps. When a message arrives, a small circular icon representing the contact appears; tapping it opens a miniaturized window where users can read and reply to messages instantly. This overlay design is intended to reduce interruptions, making it easier to manage several tasks simultaneously.
While Android has offered a native “Bubbles” API for several years, WhatsApp’s direct integration seeks to optimize the performance and visual consistency of the feature within its own ecosystem. Users will likely have the option to enable or disable these bubbles for specific contacts or groups, providing a high degree of control over their notification environment.
Currently, this update is in the testing phase with a select group of beta participants. Once the developmental fine-tuning is complete, the feature is expected to roll out to the general public via a future stable update.
