Uber India has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its rider and driver safety ecosystem at its annual “Uber Surakshit” conference in New Delhi. The ride-hailing giant introduced several localized, technology-driven updates designed to minimize on-road risks, enhance accountability, and provide rapid medical assistance during emergencies across Indian cities.
The flagship addition to the platform is the “Record My Ride” feature, an industry-first initiative aimed at deterring misconduct and resolving disputes. The tool allows drivers to utilize their smartphones to securely record encrypted video and audio of the vehicle’s cabin during a trip. To balance safety with strict data privacy standards, the recordings are stored locally in an encrypted format on the driver’s device. Neither the driver nor Uber can access or view the footage unless a safety incident occurs and the file is voluntarily attached to an official support report.
Addressing post-accident medical emergencies, Uber has partnered with specialized healthcare logistics provider Dial 4242 to launch an integrated “Ambulance Assistance” service. Accessible directly through Uber’s 24×7 Safety Line, this feature ensures that riders and drivers can get immediate, real-time medical dispatch and coordination support in the event of a severe crash or health crisis during a journey.
To further tighten trip security and eliminate vehicle swapping fraud, Uber is rolling out a “Set Your Own PIN” option. This allows passengers to establish a permanent four-digit verification code for all rides, ensuring they never board the wrong car. Furthermore, to combat distracted driving, Uber deployed a strict “Don’t Type & Drive” protocol, which locks the driver app’s typing interface while the vehicle is in motion, pushing drivers to rely on voice commands and automated one-tap replies instead.
