Steam app update brings hardware acceleration for improved gaming performance, and more on Macs

Steam has released an update for its macOS client, bringing improvements to the in-game overlay, note-taking functionality, and window pinning. The update introduces a cloud notepad, a web browser, enhanced notification tabs, and hardware acceleration for Linux and Mac systems. This update aims to streamline the code-sharing process across different Steam platforms, enabling faster implementation of new features.

Following the update, the Steam app now utilizes a new framework that ensures consistent features across multiple platforms. The interface of the app has also been refreshed with updated dialogs, menus, and fonts.

Furthermore, Steam now supports hardware acceleration on macOS and Linux, resulting in smoother animations, scrolling, and a more responsive user interface. These changes enhance the overall user experience of the Steam app on these operating systems.

The notification system of Steam has been enhanced, and a new in-game overlay with a redesigned toolbar and additional customization options has been introduced. Players can now take notes during their gameplay and pin them to appear on the game screen, even in full-screen mode. This feature is particularly useful for tracking progress while playing.

Valve, the company behind Steam, has also added the ability to pin windows from the overlay, allowing them to remain visible on top of the game while playing. These pinned windows can be adjusted in terms of transparency, displaying only the window’s contents without unnecessary elements like the title bar and extra user interface components.

A new feature called “Notes” has been introduced, making it easier for users to jot down game-related memos while playing. This feature offers extensive capabilities such as rich text formatting, the option to insert images, and the ability to create multiple notes for each game. It can be used offline as well. Notes are automatically saved for each specific game and can be seamlessly synchronized across other PCs or Steam Decks where users are logged in.
