Snap Inc. is pulling the plug on its desktop camera app that allows users to apply filters during video calls

Snap is discontinuing its desktop camera programme, which lets users add filters to video conversations like cat ears and pirate helmets. On a support page, the business announced that the product would be cancelled on January 25 but did not provide a reason. After the cutoff, users won’t be able to download or use the Snap Camera.

For creators to use with video conferencing apps like Skype, YouTube, Google Hangouts, Skype, and Zoom, the company initially released Snap Camera in 2018. Users of the Windows and Mac versions of the programme could choose a different face filter while on a video call or a live stream.

It’s advisable to remove the app and use your default camera after Snap’s camera is turned off later this month to avoid users getting a blank screen.Β The business said that the app’s web version, which debuted last July, will function with compatible AR lenses.Β Snap stated that it is concentrating more on increasing Camera Kit access for the web in response to a creator on Twitter.

β€œWe’re adjusting our web-based investments for the AR creator & developer community to focus on expanding access to Camera Kit for Web. Stay tuned for more info this year, and you can keep using Lenses on your computer with Snapchat for Web,” it noted.

It’s not altogether shocking that the Snap Camera app has been discontinued, as The Verge reported first. It shut down its drone product last year, months after it had initially been introduced, and eliminated 20% of its personnel.

The business also disclosed in December that it intended to shut down the 2017-acquired location-based networking app Zenly. With a smaller crew, the company will now concentrate on e-commerce partnerships and paid lenses to increase revenue. As a result, side initiatives like a desktop camera software will inevitably be cut back.
