Samsung’s Chinese rivals are coming together to build rivalling OLED technology

Source: Stuff

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the first product in the market with a camera hidden beneath a foldable display. having the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung continued to develop the technology despite a few drawbacks, making these the only two smartphones having a camera hidden beneath a folding screen as of right now. That might soon change, though.

A foldable OLED screen with an under-display camera has reportedly been created by BOE, Huawei, and ZTE. It may debut with the Huawei Mate X4. More crucially, the new screen created by the three Chinese companies in collaboration appears to be devoid of problems that plagued the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 4.

According to a recent leak by Digital Chat Station, a new display called the “Q8” has surfaced. The leak suggests that this display boasts a resolution of 2,480 x 1,116 pixels and features a 1,440Hz PWM dimming technology. It is reported that the panel was showcased on a Huawei device but was manufactured by BOE with the assistance of ZTE’s expertise. The leak includes an image of the display shared by Digital Chat Station.

When it comes to devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the quality of images captured with the under-display camera is often not on par with those taken with traditional front-facing cameras. Furthermore, the under-display camera sensor can sometimes be noticeable to the naked eye in certain situations. However, the latest leak suggests that the Q8 panel addresses these issues. If this proves to be true, it is exciting news for consumers, as it means we can expect to see more foldable devices with screens that are free from punch holes and notches, providing a seamless and immersive viewing experience.

The Q8 OLED display, though, screams disaster for Samsung. There haven’t been any reports claiming that the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s under-display camera will function any better than its predecessors. This could result in low-quality selfies taken with the device’s under-display camera, and a pixelated appearance on the screen directly above the camera sensor. The Huawei Mate X4 with the Q8 panel could provide a more refined under-display camera experience in that situation.
