Rajeev Suri & Satya Nadella put MIT on top

It’s time for Manipal Institute of Technology to take a bow and be counted on par with the more hallowed IITs and BITS’ of the world. In the space of 12 weeks, two of the most famous technology brands in the world, Microsoft and Nokia, have named MIT alumni as their CEOs. Understandably, this coastal campus is ready to uncork the bubbly.

“Satya and Suri provide strong testimony to fact that at MIT the emphasis is on holistic development of students. Two of the top Fortune 500 companies being led by MIT alumni is indeed a noteworthy achievement. Students who leave the portals of this engineering institute are quality products. It’s no coincidence or accident that these two MITians have made it big,” said a visibly elated Vinod V Thomas, director, MIT. Suri graduated in 1989, a year ahead of Microsoft’s Satya Nadella. “I remember teaching Suri. He was a bright student and always looked enthusiastic,” said Dr Prabhakar Nayak, HOD, E&C, MIT.

Naturally, the students are ecstatic. “The year 2014 will perhaps be the most rewarding year with two MITians reaching the zeniths of their career. They have set a goal for all of us,” said Simantika Mohapatra, a sixth semester student of Electronics & Communications.

“I was Suri’s batch-mate. He was a brilliant student. He was a friendly person,” G Muralidhar Bairy, an associate professor at MIT said.
