OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Group Chats, Turning the AI into a Collaborative Social Tool

OpenAI has announced a significant expansion of the ChatGPT platform with the introduction of a new Group Chats feature, integrating a collaborative and social dimension into the popular AI tool. This move signals the San Francisco-based startup’s broader ambition to evolve beyond a simple chatbot into a comprehensive “everything app,” following closely on the heels of the launch of its AI-generated video application, Sora.

The Group Chats feature is currently being rolled out in a pilot stage to a select user base across various subscription tiers—Free, Go, Plus, and Pro—in targeted international markets, including Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. By testing the functionality and gathering early feedback in these regions, OpenAI aims to refine the experience before a wider global launch. The core idea is to move the AI from a purely solitary interaction to a shared, communal one, allowing friends and colleagues to bring the chatbot directly into their joint decision-making processes.

The functionality is designed to be highly intuitive and useful for numerous group activities. For instance, friends planning a vacation can incorporate ChatGPT to help sift through options, suggest destinations, and settle disagreements, essentially positioning the AI as an impartial referee or a highly efficient facilitator.

Users can share articles, notes, and complex questions, tasking ChatGPT to instantly summarize and organize the information for the entire group. To initiate a conversation, users can simply tap the “people” icon in an existing chat to add friends or share a unique link that allows up to twenty people to join. A short user profile, including a name and photo, is required upon joining to ensure everyone in the conversation is identifiable.

This new social feature marks a clear differentiation from competitors like Meta, which has integrated its own AI into platforms like WhatsApp, often using those interactions for ad targeting and content personalization. OpenAI, in contrast, is promoting ChatGPT’s role as a neutral, cognitive amplifier designed purely to assist and enhance group collaboration.

By focusing on utility in group decisions and offering a dedicated, clearly labeled section in the sidebar for easy access, the company is actively forging a new path for how users interact with artificial intelligence in a social context. The development underscores a broader industry trend where the future of AI is increasingly seen as collaborative and integrated into daily workflows.
