Google is expected to announce the next generation of the Nexus 7 tablet at its annual I/O event, which will take place on May 15. Analysts suggest that Google will upgrade the specifications of the Nexus 7 and Asus will still manufacture it.

Other improvements to the Nexus 7 will include better power under the hood maybe a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a better camera and wireless charging. The device is expected to be slimmer and better built than the currently available Nexus 7. The price of the Nexus 7 will be maintained at $199. The updated Nexus 7 is also expected to bring with it the latest version of Android – Key Lime Pie.

The Nexus 7 will go head to head against the iPad Mini 2, which is expected to launch soon. If information on the Internet is to be believed, then we will see the new iPad Mini as early as Q3 2013.

Maintaining the price point of $199 and improving the specifications means that Google will make less profit on the device but hope to recover it through apps, games books and movie purchases made via the Play store.

If you are in the market to pick up a 7-inch tablet today you have quite a few options to choose from including the Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Asus FonePad, and a plethora of local budget tablet manufacturers. Some of these tablets boast of calling capabilities via a SIM card and some even go as far as to offer dual-SIM capabilities.
