New Chip Plant Strengthens India’s Tech Base

Ia major push for domestic semiconductor manufacturing, the Union Cabinet has approved a ₹3,706 crore joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn to set up a semiconductor fabrication plant in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative is part of the India Semiconductor Mission and marks the sixth facility of its kind in the country.

The upcoming manufacturing unit will be strategically located near the Noida International Airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region. Its primary focus will be on producing display driver chips, which are vital components in a wide range of electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, automobiles, and more.

The facility is designed to handle a monthly capacity of 20,000 wafers, translating to the production of around 36 million chips per month. In addition to display drivers, the plant will manufacture compound semiconductors, silicon photonics, sensor fabs, and discrete semiconductors, while also supporting Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) services.

Operations at the facility are slated to begin in 2027, and the project is expected to create approximately 2,000 direct jobs. Its proximity to the Jewar airport provides a logistical edge, facilitating smoother transportation and supply chain operations, thereby contributing to the region’s industrial development.

This investment reflects a broader push under the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, which aims to strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical technologies and reduce dependency on imported chips. The HCL-Foxconn collaboration is seen as a strategic milestone in India’s bid to become a global player in the semiconductor supply chain.

As the demand for electronic devices continues to surge globally, this facility will play a key role in fulfilling both domestic and international needs. The joint venture not only underscores confidence in India’s manufacturing ecosystem, but also signals the country’s growing prominence in advanced technology sectors.
