Motorola Mobility on Tuesday said it has appointed Amit Boni as General Manager of India. Boni will lead the Motorola Mobility’s India team and will be responsible for its go-to-market strategy.

“The India market is absolutely critical to Motorola and Amit’s appointment into this role is testament to that,” Motorola Mobility Corporate Vice-President (EMEA and APAC) Magnus Ahlqvist said.

Motorola this year launched two smartphones, Moto G and Moto X, in the Indian market through online marketplace Flipkart. The smartphones were aimed at the affordable and medium-priced segment.

Motorola had launched its first handset, Moto G, in India after a nearly two-year hiatus. After being acquired by Google in May 2012, Motorola did not introduce any new products in India until the Moto G this year.

Notably, in possibly the biggest tech deal by a Chinese firm, Lenovo in January said it will buy Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 billion.

“Motorola is a highly relevant brand for Indian buyers. Our products are doing extremely well and with Amit’s extensive market experience and a rich perspective on the segment, we will continue to grow in India,” Ahlqvist added.

On his appointment, Boni said his focus is on growing the business in the country. “I see tremendous opportunity for Motorola in India. We are building the Motorola business for the long term and I am excited about what the future holds,” Boni added.

His first assignment was with Microland, Bangalore. Later, he joined EVS and Honeywell. Boni joined Motorola Mobility in 2010 taking charge of GTM strategy and sales operations for the Asia region.
