E LEARNING & EDUCATION MARKET IN INDIA:

Use of technology in education coupled with classroom learning has gained huge traction among educational institutions to improve content delivery and increase student efficiency. Various tools of e-learning like smart classes, satellite TV, and computer based learning are being used by schools today across India.  The e-learning sector in India is booming and Asia is the fastest growing E-learning market driven by India and China according to a report by Docebo. Indian e-learning content market expected to grow at CAGR of 18.4% from FY 2014 to FY 2018.  According to a report by India Ratings, the Indian education sector’s market size in FY12 was estimated to be Rs. 341,180crore (US$ 54.20 billion). The sector grew at a compounded annual growth rate of 16.5 per cent during FY05-FY12. LAVA aims to harness the potential of the Indian Education industry, which is expected to increase to Rs 602,410crore by FY15.

KEY TO SUCCESS:

The key to success of e-learning in India is to have a large scale and cost-effective technology infrastructure to provide digital content to students. The educational institutions need an economical device that can be given to students to enable them access content during school and after-school hours. Tablets have emerged as a powerful solution for an effective and efficient content dissemination due to their ease of use, portability, optimum screen size for readability and connectivity. A joint report by McKinsey and the GSMA predicts the mobile education market could be worth $70 billion globally by 2020, and predicts demand for mobile education devices, like smartphones and tablets, may be worth another $32 billion in the same time frame. The new range of LAVA tablets is not just an affordable alternative to laptops but also incorporates the most sophisticated tools of digital learning.

MEGHALAYA GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE: With an endeavour to empower the students in this rapidly changing world with personalised and digital content, the Government of Meghalaya announced Digital Learning Aid for Students Scheme in which 25000 tablets had to be distributed among Class XII students . This scheme is one of landmark Information Technology-centric initiatives of the State Government, with a vision that IT will revolutionize the way of teaching and learning.

To support this initiative, Lava announced the launch of the first lot of M-TAB in Meghalaya. The tablet had an in built education app – Digital Library which enables students to access the educational content. All the tablets presented to the students were pre-loaded with study materials of Class XI and Class XII courses of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and MBOSE (Meghalaya Board of School Education). Sample question papers for Medical and Engineering examinations, classroom teaching format video & audio books and Megh-Tube, a short video clip that showcases the development activities in Meghalaya have also been pre-loaded in the tablets on the 8GB memory card.

The introduction of M- Tab has made a great impact on the students as a 7-inch display makes it easier to replicate the content of a book onto a tablet screen giving the same look and feel of reading pages from a book. The students could experience real life like image quality of illustrations, especially while studying subjects like medical science, geography, arts & graphics etc.  The tablet allowed them to highlight text while reading, take notes in the margin and access a dictionary directly within the book itself.

Just as tablets made a huge impact on students’ learning in Meghalaya, they will play a great role in evolvement of e-learning as a future mode of teaching that can be blended perfectly with classroom learning in both private and government schools. There is a need for collaboration among the educational institutions, device manufacturers and content providers to take this concept of e-learning to the next level.
