KDE Community Announces Open Source Plasma Mobile

The KDE community recently introduced a free and open-source mobile operating system named the Plasma Mobile. The community had planned for such an initiative even before Ubuntu Touch was announced. Users can reportedly switch from one interface to another, as Plasma 5 on the desktop comes with a converged shell. If the reports are to be believed, KDE wanted to launch tablets integrated with Plasma software. However, this was never executed.

Plasma Mobile was unveiled at KDE’s Annual Akademy World Summit, where it stated that Plasma is different from other operating systems. As Plasma Mobile happens to be a free open-source operating system, it can be distributed, modified as well as re-used without any restrictions.

Designed as an inclusive system, Plasma Mobile supports various applications. While native applications can be written in QT; KDE’s choice of toolkit , Plasma Mobile also comes with the support for GTK apps, Ubuntu Touch apps, Sailfish OS apps and even Android apps. The current Plasma Mobile is running on top of Kubuntu and is built on top of KDE technologies like the KDE frameworks, Qt toolkit and Kwin window manager.
