Instagram is set to display brief self-captured videos above your Direct Messages (DMs) soon

Instagram is introducing a novel aspect to its Notes feature, allowing users to soon post brief, continuous videos of themselves atop their messages.

The app is experimenting with an innovative approach to augment the Notes feature, initially a means to share succinct written updates with followers or friends. In place of the usual profile picture on Notes, the upcoming alteration will involve short, looping selfie videos displayed at the top of your messages.

Adam Mosseri demonstrated the feature, presenting an animated Direct Messages section showcasing several small videos playing automatically above the chat threads. The reception of these video inclusions – whether they are perceived as endearing, bothersome, or distracting – remains to be seen. Nevertheless, the Notes feature is quite popular, and it appears that individuals will soon be adding a variety of content to their DMs.

Instagram has been heavily inclined towards short-form videos of late, prevalent across various sections of the app such as stories, Reels (now the primary method for video posting), and now making their way into Direct Messages.

Mosseri announced the rollout of this new capability, stating, “This week, we started testing the ability to post selfie videos in Notes. Soon, people will be able to update their default profile photo in notes with a short, looping video. You’ll still be able to share a thought via text to accompany the video. If you start seeing videos in notes, let us know what you think!”

While the video selfie feature is currently in its testing phase and not yet accessible, users should expect a camera icon integrated into the profile picture in the Notes section. This will enable direct video recording within Notes, allowing for easy sharing with contacts. Text can still be added to complement the video, serving as a platform for expressing one’s thoughts alongside the visual content.
