Successful Nationwide Testing
A comprehensive trial of the system was conducted across the country on May 2, 2026. During this exercise:
-
Mobile users received “Extremely Severe Alerts” accompanied by a distinct loud beep or siren and vibration.
-
The test covered major urban centers, including Delhi NCR and various state capitals.
-
Officials clarified that these were test notifications intended solely to evaluate system performance and required no action from the public.
Enhanced Speed and Capabilities
The new Cell Broadcast (CB) facility significantly upgrades the existing SACHET integrated alert portal. Key improvements include:
-
Near-Instant Delivery: Unlike traditional SMS, CB technology transmits alerts simultaneously to all devices within a targeted geographic area, bypassing potential network congestion.
-
Broad Hazard Coverage: The system is designed to issue warnings for time-sensitive events like tsunamis, earthquakes, lightning strikes, and man-made hazards such as gas leaks.
-
Localized and Multilingual: Future alerts will be customized to specific locations and delivered in local languages to ensure widespread understanding.
Developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), this framework aligns with international standards to build a more resilient and responsive emergency communication ecosystem for all citizens.
