In a major initiative to bolster national security and address the critical talent shortage in the tech sector, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) have partnered to introduce India’s first practice-oriented undergraduate degree in cyber defense: the Bachelor of Cybersecurity (B.Cyber.). The innovative four-year programme is set to officially commence for the academic year beginning July 2026.
Addressing a Critical National Deficit
As India accelerates its digital transformation across vital sectors—including governance, defense, banking, healthcare, and telecommunications—protecting the country’s digital ecosystem has become a top priority. However, the industry currently faces a daunting deficit of nearly 1.5 million skilled cybersecurity professionals. The B.Cyber. programme has been strategically engineered to fill this widening gap by cultivating a elite pipeline of workforce-ready experts.
Commenting on the launch, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration:
“Cybersecurity is now fundamental to India’s technological sovereignty and national security. Building a resilient cyber ecosystem requires professionals who possess not only strong theoretical foundations but also extensive hands-on experience in defending complex systems.”
A Distinctive, Experience-First Educational Model
Departing from traditional engineering and computer science curricula that rely heavily on classroom lectures, the B.Cyber. degree introduces a unique, competency-based framework. The first two years focus on intensive, laboratory-driven instruction. Students will build foundational expertise in core areas such as Linux system administration, ethical hacking, computer networks, cryptography, and vulnerability assessment.
The true differentiator of the programme, however, lies in its final two years. Under an ambitious 2-year Field Deployment Professional Project, students will spend their last four semesters entirely outside the traditional classroom, working on live, real-world cybersecurity projects. During this immersive period, they will receive direct mentorship from seasoned industry specialists and experts from critical and strategic organizations.
Specialized Career Pathways
The comprehensive curriculum allows students to progressively master multiple highly technical domains, including:
-
Security Operations Centres (SOC) & Cloud Security
-
Malware Analysis & Firmware Reverse Engineering
-
Hardware and Embedded Systems Security
-
Digital Forensics & Applied Cryptography
Graduates of this pioneering joint degree will be uniquely positioned to immediately enter the workforce as high-impact professionals, skipping the lengthy on-the-job training cycles typically required by corporate and government employers.
Admissions for the inaugural batch are being processed jointly by both institutes. Interested candidates can find official application details and guidelines via the dedicated portal at https://tinyurl.com/bcyberiitm.
