Huawei debuts Mate X5 featuring a 7.85-inch foldable screen, Kirin 9000s chipset, triple 50MP cameras, and satellite connectivity

Huawei has recently launched the Mate 60 5G and Mate 60 Pro 5G in China, but instead of hosting a dedicated launch event, the company listed these devices on Huawei Mall (Vmall). There were speculations that Huawei might also introduce the Mate 60 Pro+ 5G and the Huawei Mate X5 foldable phone in a September launch event, but once again, these products were directly listed on Huawei Mall without a formal event. Here’s an overview of the specifications, features, and pricing for the Mate X5.

The Huawei Mate X5 features a 6.4-inch OLED LTPO external display with a resolution of 2504 x 1080 pixels, a 20.9:9 aspect ratio, and impressive touch sampling rates. Internally, it boasts a 7.85-inch foldable OLED LTPO display with a resolution of 2496 x 2224 pixels and an 8:7.1 aspect ratio. Both screens support a wide range of features, including a variable refresh rate, rich color reproduction, and high-frequency dimming. For security, it includes a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

The exact chipset powering the Mate X5 is not specified, but it’s likely to be the Kirin 9000s, also found in the Mate 60 series. It comes with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, although there’s no mention of 5G support.

The camera setup includes an 8-megapixel front camera and a rear setup featuring a 50-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with OIS. Like the Mate 60 series, the device runs on Harmony OS 4.0.

The Mate X5 is equipped with a 5,060mAh battery that supports fast wired and wireless charging. Additional features include dual SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, dual-frequency GPS, NFC, face unlock, USB-C, two-way satellite connectivity, and IPX8-rated water resistance. In its folded state, the device measures 156.9 x 72.4 x 11.08 mm and 156.9 x 141.5 x 5.3mm when unfolded, with a weight of around 245 grams.

The Mate X5 comes in two variants: 12 GB RAM + 512 GB storage and 16 GB RAM + 512 GB storage. It’s available in several colors, including Feather Black, Feather White, Feather Gold, Green Mountain Dai, and Phantom Purple, with purple and green variants featuring leather backs and the others having glass backs.

Huawei also offers a Mate X5 Collector’s Edition in two configurations: 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage or 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Pricing details for the Mate X5 series are yet to be confirmed.

The Mate X5 and its Collector’s Edition are currently on pre-sale at Huawei Mall with a deposit of 1,000 Yuan (~$136), with a scheduled release date of September 15. Global availability for the Mate X5 is still unknown.
