Google’s Pixel June Feature Drop brings cinematic wallpaper, improved safety features, and more

After a slight delay, the June Pixel Feature Drop has started rolling out for Pixel phones, including the Pixel Watch. This feature drop introduces several notable additions, such as macro mode in video, cinematic video, and emoji wallpaper. It also brings enhancements to health and security features, among other updates.

One of the exciting features is Macro Focus Video, which allows users of the Pixel 7 Pro to capture close-up videos of subjects like butterflies and flowers. Additionally, Pixel 6 and newer models now have a selfie timer that can be activated by raising your palm to the phone, offering convenient timing options.

Cinematic Wallpapers and Emoji Workshop, showcased at I/O 2023, are now available for Pixel phones. Cinematic Wallpapers use depth estimation and generative adversarial network technology to create a parallax effect when the device is tilted. The Emoji Workshop enables users to create unique wallpapers using over 4,000 emojis, with customization options for style, density, and colors.

The safety features have also received improvements. Users can now trigger the Safety Check through Google Assistant by requesting a specific duration. Crash Detection has been enhanced to notify emergency services and contacts with real-time location information in the event of a car crash.

Several other features are included in this update. The Google Recorder app allows users to attach speaker labels to recordings, export transcripts to Google Docs, create speaker-labeled video clips, and search for speakers within recordings. Adaptive haptics reduce vibration intensity when the device is on a hard, flat surface, ensuring a smoother user experience. Adaptive charging gradually charges the phone to 100% an hour before it is expected to be unplugged, learning from charging habits to optimize effectiveness.

Furthermore, two new Google Assistant voices are being introduced, expanding the available options for users. The Pixel Home app has been redesigned to provide quick access to smart home devices from the lock screen.
