Google has officially expanded its background AI assistant, Gemini Spark, to its native macOS desktop application. The rollout transitions the platform from a conversational chatbot into an active, autonomous agent capable of orchestrating multi-step digital workflows directly on an individual’s computer.
The cornerstone of the macOS integration is local file automation. Rather than requiring users to manually upload materials to a cloud browser, Gemini Spark operates directly within the desktop environment via permissioned “Connected Folders.” Users can delegate tedious administrative operations, such as instructing the agent to scan an unorganized Downloads directory, sort mismatched PDFs into labeled archives, or aggregate financial numbers from locally saved invoices to compile a budget spreadsheet in Google Workspace. To protect user privacy, Google emphasizes that file access remains strictly controlled by the device owner, who can revoke folder links instantly.
Expanding its cross-platform utility, Google also teased an upcoming remote execution update. This future capability will allow users to initiate multi-step computer tasks remotely via their smartphones—such as requesting Spark to locate a specific report on a workplace Mac, extract a revenue figure, and email it out while the user is away from their desk.
Beyond desktop automation, Gemini Spark is receiving deep integrations with several third-party platforms. It now connects with Google Tasks and Keep, allowing users to seamlessly transition scattered notes into organized to-do lists. It has also expanded to support external applications like Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. Furthermore, a newly deployed real-time topic tracking feature empowers Spark to monitor blogs, social media, weather, and financial data in the background, instantly alerting the user when specific triggers occur, such as a stock hitting a designated value or a sports match concluding.
The macOS beta is currently rolling out in the United States to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and older.
