Google has expanded the capabilities of its Gemini AI platform by introducing a feature that allows users to share their personalized AI assistants, called Gems, with others. The update, announced on Thursday, enhances collaboration by making it easier to distribute custom AI tools among friends, family, or colleagues.
Originally launched last year as part of the Gemini Advanced subscription, Gems enable users to create AI assistants tailored to specific tasks using custom instructions. Google also provided premade options, such as a learning coach, brainstorming partner, career guide, writing editor, and coding assistant, catering to diverse needs.
Previously, Gems were private to their creators. With the new update, users can share their Gems similarly to files on Google Drive, complete with permission controls to determine who can view, use, or edit the assistant. This functionality is designed to save time and reduce redundant work, especially in professional settings where multiple individuals might otherwise build similar AI assistants.
Beyond the workplace, the update opens doors for everyday users to share meal planners, holiday itineraries, collaborative writing tools, and other practical applications. The feature aligns with Google’s broader vision of making AI more accessible and collaborative for a wide audience.
This update follows Google’s announcement in March that Gems would no longer be restricted to paid tiers. Initially limited to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, Gems are now available to all users in over 150 countries, including support for file uploads. By democratizing access and enabling sharing, Google aims to foster a more connected and productive AI ecosystem, where custom assistants can be leveraged across professional and personal contexts.
With this rollout, Google Gemini AI strengthens its position as a versatile platform for both individual productivity and collaborative innovation, empowering users to create, customize, and share AI assistants more efficiently than ever.
