Google Drive improves document scanning on Android phones

Google has rolled out an update to the Google Drive app on Android, introducing an improved document scanner. The update, version 2.23.457.1, brings a new interface to the document scanner, enhancing the user experience. Notable changes include a dedicated FAB (Floating Action Button) labeled “Scan” positioned above the rectangular FAB for “New.” Unlike the previous version, the updated Drive app now opens the camera viewfinder within the app itself, eliminating the need to redirect to the default camera app. The controls have been streamlined, offering an “Auto capture” mode and a “Manual” mode. After capturing a photo, users can access the “Preview” page, which includes features like automatic crop, no crop, rotate, and various filter options such as Auto, Color, Grayscale.

Additionally, the update includes other changes to the Drive app, such as a redesigned Home feed with a “Suggested” tab, the replacement of Notifications with Activities, and the replacement of Workspace with Starred. The Workspace tab has been relocated to the navigation drawer and is accessible for enterprise accounts.

While the document scanner update primarily focuses on cosmetic changes and interface improvements, it aims to enhance the overall functionality and ease of use for users scanning documents using the Google Drive app on Android.

In a related context, Google has recently updated the Chrome Web Store, introducing a Material You theme. The changes bring a more rounded theme to the web store, aligning it visually with the Google Play Store. The update also introduces new categories, a navigation plane for better exploration of extensions and themes, and a dedicated section for curated extensions and themes based on user preferences.
