Gamesa Successfully Commissions Its First MW Scale Solar Farm In India

The turnkey Project commissioned in Vedachandur –near Madurai, Tamil Nadu marks the Company’s successful entry into Solar.

Gamesa, one of the leading renewable energy company worldwide, today announced the commissioning of its Gamesamaiden solar project in India. By Commissioning the 9MW turnkey solar project near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Gamesa has successfully entered the promising solar territory with the intention of winning similar orders given the new found thrust to achieve more from renewable power. The esteemed customers based out of Tamil Nadu stand to gain from the first MW scale Solar Farm by Gamesa.

It was in July 2015 that Gamesa, No.1 player in wind turbine manufacturing with a market share of 25 per cent, announced its strategic entry into the solar market, conveying the Company’s decision to offer EPC solutions for MW Scale, Roof-Top projects and Rural/Micro-Grid Projects besides continuing to expand its Inverter Solutions.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. K.V. Sajay, Executive Vice President – Solar Business Unit, Gamesa India added, “The successful commissioning of this project has given us the much needed confidence to continue our concerted efforts in emerging as a strong player in the solar market. Today, as a nation we have harnessed only 4.6 GW of solar power when we actually have tremendous opportunity to harness what is remaining of the 2,100 GW the country has to offer. We consider that this project is our first step towards harnessing this huge opportunity thereby establishing ourselves as a strong solar player as well. In recent years, India has emerged as one of the most promising wind power markets: installed capacity is expected to increase from close to 23,000 MW today to 40,000 MW by the end of 2019, driven by huge pent-up demand for electricity, according to sector consultancy BTM’s estimates.

The new orders obtained by Gamesa in India reinforce its solid commercial positioning: according to MAKE CONSULT, the company ended 2014 as the leading OEM in the country for the second year running, with a market share of 25% in 2014, compared to 21% in 2013, when it also was the market leader.

Gamesa’s presence in India – as technology provider and wind farm developer – dates back to 2009. To date, Gamesa has installed over 2,100 MW and services more than 1,700 MW under O&M agreements. In addition, in its capacity as wind farm developer, it has developed over 1,300 MW.
