China Surpasses Starlink with Record-Breaking Satellite Internet Speeds

In a significant breakthrough, China has reportedly outpaced Starlink in satellite internet speeds, achieving a remarkable 100Gbps space-to-ground transmission. The test was conducted by Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. using one of its Jilin-1 satellites, setting a new benchmark for satellite communication. This achievement was made possible with just 80 satellites in lower orbit, far fewer than the 5,500 satellites relied upon by Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The new system utilizes high-resolution laser transmission, enabling incredibly fast data transfers—equivalent to downloading ten full-length HD movies in just one second. This technology positions China at the forefront of the race for 6G satellite communication, as experts claim it marks a substantial leap in the sector.

Unlike Starlink, which primarily focuses on inter-satellite laser links, China has already begun large-scale deployment of laser-based satellite-to-ground communications. This strategy gives China a distinct edge over existing satellite internet providers, potentially reshaping the global broadband landscape.

This rapid progress could pose a serious challenge to the dominance of current satellite internet providers. Meanwhile, competitors like India’s Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are also preparing to launch their own satellite internet services, adding further competition to this swiftly evolving industry. As the technology matures, the global race for high-speed satellite internet is set to intensify, potentially transforming how people access broadband across the globe.
