Canon has expanded its lineup of compact and budget-friendly f/2.8 zoom lenses with the launch of the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM. Designed for full-frame Canon EOS R-series mirrorless cameras, this new lens offers a blend of portability, affordability, and advanced features, catering to both photographers and hybrid content creators.
The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM joins Canon’s compact zoom series, alongside the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, launched last September. Weighing just 445 grams (15.7 ounces) and measuring 91 millimeters (3.6 inches) in its retracted state, it’s significantly smaller than the pro-grade RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM, which weighs 840 grams (1.9 pounds) and is 127 millimeters (5 inches) long.
Priced at $1,149, the RF 16-28mm is a more accessible option compared to the L-series RF 15-35mm, which costs $1,250 more. Despite its affordability, the lens promises impressive performance, featuring 16 elements in 13 groups, including two aspherical lenses and four UD lenses to ensure sharp image quality.
Key features include optical image stabilization offering up to 5.5 stops of shake correction, which extends to eight stops when paired with compatible IBIS-equipped cameras. The lens also supports focus breathing correction, making it a solid choice for videographers.
With its stepper motor technology, the RF 16-28mm delivers fast and quiet autofocus. It can focus as close as 0.2 meters at 28mm, achieving a maximum magnification of 0.26x. However, users are advised to enable Canon’s digital lens corrections to reduce vignetting, especially at 16mm.
While the lens is dust- and drip-proof, it doesn’t match the durability of Canon’s L-series lenses. Additionally, it is not internally zooming, meaning the lens extends during use. A lens hood is not included but can be purchased separately.
The Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM is set to ship starting February 11, providing a compelling option for those seeking a lightweight, high-quality ultra-wide zoom lens at a competitive price.
