In a bold move to safeguard digital integrity, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India is leading high-level discussions with over 30 countries to develop unified technical and legal frameworks against deepfakes. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the Minister characterized the surge of AI-driven misinformation as a direct assault on the foundational trust of families, governance, and social institutions.
Vaishnaw’s Mandate: Trust Over Innovation
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that “innovation without trust is a liability,” signaling a shift toward stricter regulatory oversight under his leadership. He revealed that the government is actively drafting mandates for the mandatory watermarking and labeling of all AI-generated content. This move aims to protect human creativity and ensure consumers can distinguish between organic and synthetic media. The Minister asserted that the threat posed by deepfakes is “non-negotiable,” placing the responsibility on platforms and creators to maintain social stability.
A Call for Cultural Accountability
Addressing the borderless nature of digital media, Vaishnaw urged global OTT giants to prioritize local cultural contexts. He argued that platforms must align their content with the values of the country where it is consumed, rather than just the standards of their parent companies. This push for “cultural guardrails” underscores Vaishnaw’s commitment to maintaining social harmony in an increasingly connected world.
Building a 25-Year Talent Pipeline
Beyond regulation, the Minister shared an ambitious vision for India’s creative future. He announced the “Create in India Mission,” modeled after his successful Semiconductor Mission, to build a future-ready workforce. This includes the establishment of content creator labs in 15,000 schools across the country. Reassuring the artistic community, Vaishnaw stated that AI is an opportunity for growth rather than a replacement for human storytelling, famously noting that adapting to new technology should be as natural as “a fish taking to water.”
